As I closed my eyes and tried to force myself to sleep, I couldn’t assuage the thoughts that pounded in my mind. How was this man supposedly so horrible and merciless? How was he a product of the man who had killed my father?

And why, despite years of resentment toward his family, was I second-guessing my job here after spending only one day with him?

Sienna was intent on making my life a living hell for as long as I kept her here.

I’d had doubts before, but this time, I was sure.

We’d had a long few days. Yesterday, she had refused to leave the room. The day before that, I’d tried and failed to convince her to come and have dinner with us, yet she had no problem escaping through the window during my guard’s rotations to get herself something different to eat.

She, of course, charged my credit card again.

It felt like a constant battle between us, and I didn’t have time to fight back. Not when there had been two more attacks just that morning—both ending in numerous casualties. I’d been run ragged by Valentino, and I had no time to deal with her bullshit, so I let it slide.

I’d have plenty of time to explore this situation with her after I handled Valentino, but the motherfucker went so far underground that I couldn’t find him. As soon as he reared his head, I’d finish this.

Then, I’d handle Sienna.

I knocked on the bedroom door, carrying a bag of breakfast from a local spot I frequented. I wiggled the handle and, once again, found it locked.

On second thought, I wasn’t too busy to deal with this right now.

“I’m busy,” she said in a singsong voice.

She had the tone of someone who had just won a great battle.

“I brought breakfast.”

“I’m busy,” she repeated more firmly.

I forced myself to take a breath and consider the merits of throttling her.

“If I have to go and get the key to this room again—”

“I’ll faceconsequences?” she asked mockingly.

That was enough. I had rock-solid patience, but after all her pushing and Valentino’s bullshit, I wasdone.I didn’t bother staying and arguing with her as I turned toward where I kept all the household keys in the kitchen. I opened the drawer and sifted through them once, then twice.

The key to my room was missing.

I ground my teeth, turned back toward my room, and stormed in that direction.

I didn’t even reach my doorway before I shouted, “I’ve given you enough chances. Open it in three seconds, or I’m kicking it down.”

Three seconds were too many to wait when the anger shot through my body with a vengeance. I couldn’t remember the last time someone had pissed me off so much. When people became this inconvenient, they didn’t usually live long enough to further anger me.

“You’re not going to destroy the door to your bedroom.”

She had no idea what I would do to get to her right now. She’d been intriguing, attractive, and mysterious enough that I was willing to give her second chances. She could use a fucking attitude adjustment, but flashes of my mother kept me from acting.

I didn’t harm innocent women, but this one?

Sienna was approaching a line I’d drawn in the sand between us, and if she crossed it, I was done. She’d pushed and pushed further and harder than anyone before her. And I’d let her get away with it.

I was done.
