“Fuck,” I shouted, throwing myself into my office chair and leaning into the surface of my desk.

There were a million other things that needed my attention, but I could only think about this. I could only think about the way her skin glowed red when she was angry. The dimple in her chin as she shouted at me. The way she stood her ground despite what she knew about me.

My mind split between my wanting to fuck her and kill her, and I wasn’t sure which option would win in the end.

All I knew for sure was that I couldn’t let her go. From what I’d seen, she wasn’t a genuine threat. She was an ordinary woman who needed to get her temper in check, but she wasn’t a danger. I could tell that after the first day I’d spent with her, and maybe it had been why I’d put off calling my tech guy to run a thorough background on her.

I’d been too busy with Valentino’s shit to call Justin, but Marquis had done a quick Google search. He’d found a mundane profile on Facebook with a few shares and minimal photos. He’d found an elementary school article where a little girl held up a second prize in a science fair. It had been a smaller version of Sienna’sface, but unmistakably her. There were no felonies or prison records, which had been good enough for the first few days.

Beyond that, though, once I allowed Justin to dig into her past and reveal she wasn’t a threat, I’d have to let her go.

The fiery temper and the constant challenge she posed to me had become something of a welcome relief to the otherwise serious nature of my days. It should have felt like a nuisance, but the thought of losing that distraction burned through my chest.

I didn’t want to let her go.

And once I knew she wasn’t a threat, I’d have to do just that.

I exhaled deeply and flipped my phone in my hands. I didn’t have to let her go, I decided. I could wait a while longer and sit on any information I learned. I’d find a way to keep her for a little while longer.

Maybe after a few more days, the novelty would fade. Maybe the lust and burning attraction would fade, too. I picked up my phone, and it went only two rings before Justin answered.

“I need all the information you have on Sienna Rossi. I can send over a photo of her ID, but I need everything you’ve got.”

“You want a deep dive or just surface-level information?”

“Everything,” I retorted.

“I’ll send the surface shit in the morning, and it will take some time to dig into everything else. You got a week or two?”

“Get it to me as fast as you can,” I told him.

“I’ll do my best, boss.”

I ended the call. If she was going to be around my niece and Lucia, I needed to know who she was. Right now, all I knew was her adamant dislike for me and my demands.

I allowed my anger to cool slightly as I sat in my office for a couple of hours, going through some paperwork that needed to be finished. When I finally strode out, heading in the direction of my bedroom, I paused at the sound of voices flooding from the kitchen. I recognized Lucia’s, and after a moment, I stopped dead in my tracks.

“I know you think it’s unnecessary, but it’s important to me,” Sienna whispered.

“People don’t usually treat the hired help like family. It’s not expected.”

I heard Sienna shift. “But it’s the right thing to do, and being rude—acting the way I did—it’s not me,” she admitted to Lucia. “This is Dante’s home, and as long as I’m here, it’s not fair of me to make you feel uncomfortable.”

“From what I’ve heard, you aren’t here voluntarily,” Lucia said chidingly. I wanted to laugh. She’d scolded me for leaving Sienna “to rot” in her room. “I don’t expect you to be pleasant.”

“That’s not your fault. Can I help you with the rest of the dishes as an apology?”

“Absolutely not. This is—”

“I insist.”

I heard the dishes clattering, and Lucia sighed loudly.

I turned back toward my office, adamant to learn more about the woman I’d let into my home.
