His smile never faded as he rolled up his window and drove off, leaving me to deal with the repercussions of his words.

“Show?” Celeste inquired. I looked back to her, only to see her delicate head tilted to the side.

Fuck,I didn’t want to do this, at least not yet. I knew it was going to happen at some point, just by the way she consumed my thoughts already, but I was hoping to wait until her grief had faded a bit. A big part of me was numb to other people’s feelings and didn’t care much about emotions, but I wasn’t a complete monster. It hadn’t even been amonthsince her uncle passed, and now she was about to have her entire world ripped apart and turned upside down.

When it rains, it pours.

“What does that mean?” she continued, slowly making her way back down the steps. Locks of her hair gently framed her face as she descended, and her gaze lit up with curiosity. I forced myself to watch her eyes the whole way, not giving her any reaction as her body neared mine, even though my lower half couldn’t help but answer to her presence. Mentally, I tried to get my stiffening cock to settle the fuck down, but it had a mind of its own.

When her foot hit the bottom, she lifted her chin up to me, careful to not let the hood of her jacket slide off her head.

And I looked down at her, my jaw tight and my shoulders square.

Only a select group of people knew what this placereallywas, andnoneof them were any of the women I’d pursued in the past. I’ve always kicked them out before sundown, and none of them were curious enough to ask why. And I sure as fuck never cared enough about them to let them in on the secret.

Untilnow.

Untilher.

It was only a matter of time before she knew.

There was something about her that made me want to let her in. There was a mystery toherthat settled in well to the mystery of allthis. And I wasn’t going to let it go anytime soon.

She blinked up at me, her dark eyelashes fluttering against the soft skin of her cheeks.“Caius,”she said, tasting the nectar of my name on her tongue, letting the sound roll off her lips for the very first time.

And that was the moment I could feel the deepest parts of me shatter.

She knew me, she knew my name. Shehadme.

It was that simple.

“You need to come with me,” I rasped, breaking eye contact with her and turning away. I began to walk down the path and waited for her to follow.

Celeste

Puddles of water splashed under my feet as I jogged to catch up. Caius was only a few steps ahead, but his strides were so long that reaching him took me longer than expected.

“Caius,” I prodded, and I could see his muscles tense at the sound of his name coming from my lips. “Who was that? And what was he talking about?”

Caius ignored me and kept walking. The rain from above began to taper off as the sky darkened with nightfall. I glanced upward to see the rain clouds slowly being replaced with darkness. Keeping my hand on my hood, I shielded myself from the leftover drops.

“Caius,”I pleaded again. There was an urgency in his voice earlier, one that I couldn’t shake. I didn’t want to go with him, despite my curiosity, but the aching seriousness in his voice was real.

Very real.

“Just come with me,” he commanded, neither one of us breaking stride. His hood remained down, and streams of water dripped off his dark hair and down his smooth neck.

He led me to a house, one that was larger than I could’ve ever expected to be on a plot of land like this. The entire home was painted black, from roof to ground. The tall roof came to several rounded points, almost looking like a modern cathedral. On the right side of the structure was a long corridor of floor-to-ceiling glass that allowed me to see inside perfectly. Lingering rainwater ran down the windows, creating a soft, streaked illusion, with dim lighting filtering out from the inside. It was gorgeous and beautifully made, and I gasped at the sight.

Caius guided me to the front steps, and as he stepped up the first few, I remained at the bottom. He must’ve felt the lack of presence behind him because he paused to turn around.

“Celeste,” he began, releasing a soft plea in his voice. Suddenly, I knew this entire situation was bigger than me, bigger than my heart’s reach, bigger than my understanding.

I pulled my arms up to my chest. “Is this… your house?”

“Yes.”

“Do you live here?”
