I felt that, too.

I felt it all before Caius revealed all the secrets to me. Now, I don’t know what I feel.

Serena sat down on the bench across from me and wiped the tears away with the back of her hands. “God, this sucks.”

I crossed my arms over my chest. “I know.”

More tears cascaded down her face, but they began to slow. Her rivers of tears decreased to a few drops a minute, then lessened again to a heavy glisten lining her bottom lids. I lookedover to the urn, my expression blank as I seared the image of it into my mind.

“At least he’s here,” Serena spoke. “It seems like a nice place to be.”

Looking back at her, I stared at her sad expression as she tried to find the silver lining.

But there wasn’t one.

“Yeah,” was all I managed to force out, and my attempt at covering my tone in a fake sincerity failed.

Serena caught on instantly. “What?”

“Nothing.”

Serena’s sadness switched to confusion. “No, what? Why are you mad?”

“I’m not.”

“Yes, you are,” Serena pushed. “It’s obvious. It’s written all over you.”

I thought about what she was referring to. Maybe it was the fact that my arms were still tightly crossed over my chest, or maybe it was the fact that I caught myself giving a soft scowl with narrowed eyes. Probably both.

“I’m fine,” I said, uncrossing my arms and easing my expression. “I just… I think he deserves better.”

“Better?”Serena asked, shocked. “Cel, this place is beautiful. He must’ve loved it if he chose it.”

Words stuck in my throat, and I remained quiet.

“I think it’s perfect. I feel like… if I had to pick somewhere for myself, I’d choose this, too. What do you meanbetter?”

He chose it.I’d choose this. Her words were like a sharp stabbing in my ears.

“Nothing,Serena. Stop.”

Serena straightened herself and took the hint. We both looked away from one another, and I immediately felt bad for snapping at her. The thought of telling her what I knowappeared once again. I could fill her in on the supposed “truth” to this, but since I myself didn’t know if it was true, I decided to keep it to myself.

After a few more minutes of silence between us and the white noise of the rain around us, Serena stood up. “Let’s go,” she demanded, clearly still hurt and not trying to hide it.

We grabbed our umbrellas, opened them, and made our way back to my car. Before getting in, I took one final look around. Caius was nowhere to be seen.

Celeste

The iron gates were open and welcoming to me as my car rolled up the hill. Saturday, Four o’clock, right on time. The older man from the booth raised his hand in a wave, greeting me in his usual chipper tone. “Good afternoon, Miss Castell!” I heard his muffled shout through the rain on my window.

My eyebrows creased at the sight of the man’s clothes. He was wearing suit pants, a dress shirt, and a fitted suit jacket. An umbrella rested over his shoulder, shielding him from the standard rainfall as he held a clipboard in his free hand. Of all the times I’ve been here, he’s never looked this sharp and presentable before. Not even for my uncle’s burial.

I stored the thought away as I rolled down my window halfway, avoiding the pelts of rain slipping through. “Excuse me!” I shouted to him, and he smiled. “I never got your name.”

“Lawrence,” he replied, with a polite grin and tip of his chin.

“Nice to meet you,again,Lawrence.”
