I closed my eyes, and suddenly, I was able to see the tilt of her head at my question.

The first question I ever asked her.

Her curiosity always got the best of her.

Her fear never outweighed her grief.

Her mind and her choices were all her own.

Even her final one.

Opening my eyes, I looked down at her stomach. The knife was still protruding, the handle was sticking out of the water, the blade remained buried deep. Placing the vial between my teeth,I pulled the knife out of her stomach, forcing more blood to spill out into the water.

There was no hesitation in what I was about to do.

I slid my arm out from under Celeste, whose back was still against the side of the tub. I brought the bladed steel to the inside of my forearm, pressed down, and slid vertically upward. The inked skin separated, instantly drawing a heavy flow of blood.

My brows furrowed as I switched arms. With the knife in my other hand, I mirrored the action, opening that forearm as well.

I dropped the blade into the water and didn’t think about it again.

Grabbing the vial from between my teeth, I quickly opened it and held it under one of my bleeding arms. The blood trickled down into the glass tube, quickly filling it to the top. I pushed the lid back on and carefully placed it on the bathroom floor next to the tub.

For as long as I’ve known about Purgatory, and for as long as I’ve been involved in it, I’ve never known anyone to mix blood. I don’t know if it had ever been attempted, and I wasn’t sure if it was going to work.

But there’s no fucking way I wasn’t going to try.

I didn’t know if I was going about this the right way, but this was how my gut was telling me to do it. Then again, there were so many variables that I couldn’t afford to consider right now.

The only thing I knew was that I felt completely powerless in this situation. And if I could bring myself to be with her again, that’s the best way I can get my power back.

Moving my bleeding arm under Celeste, I pulled her close to my chest. Both of my arms rested under the surface of thewater, and soon, the color went from a bright red to a dark crimson.

This was it. This was the end of the balance.

I cradled her lifeless body as I could feel myself fading. Black stars began to line my vision, and my head felt light. My mouth went dry, and it was getting harder to breathe.

But I didn’t fight it. I didn’t try to keep my strength.

I closed my eyes, rested my head on top of Celeste’s, and breathed her in.

I inhaled her scent one final time before falling into the void.

Celeste

A white flower petal slipped between my fingertips.

Snapdragon. Purity. Innocence.

I grinned at its beauty. It was growing tall, taller than I remember it being before.

I slid down the row to the next set of flowers, feeling all the soft, velvet material brushing under the pads of my fingers.

I found my way to the back of the greenhouse, approaching the glass door. I opened it slowly, letting the new wave of humidity hit me in full force.

I stepped through, making my way to the inground, circular pond. The water was its normal magical teal color, and I found myself in awe of the crystalized beauty. The surface of the water was still, it was calm, and it was tranquil. My gaze moved up to all the greenery woven throughout the room and also to the new flowers that decided to find their way into the mix.

Roses. Marigolds.Carnations.
