The sight of those ones made my grin spread wide. They were so beautiful, so stunning, so elegant. I found myself studying these flowers more than any other.

They also looked healthier than ever, with the mist dotting the leaves, the buds blossoming, and the sunrays feeding them through the glass windows. I could feel the heat on the side of myface as I watched the flowers drink the water from the sprinkler above.

But then it hit me.

Sun.

I turned to look up and out the roof of the greenhouse. Sure enough, the sun was beaming down on me, on the building, and on the plants.

“What?” I whispered to myself. There was no rain, there were no clouds, there was no gloom.

My knees grew weak as I sprinted out of the pond room, weaved through the rows of flowers, and made it to the door. I pulled it open and ran outside. The sun warmed my skin like a beautiful spring day, and I had to shield my eyes as I looked up to the sky. It was a beautiful blue with no cloud in sight. My breath felt stuck in my lungs as I stood there, confused, unsure if I was dreaming or not.

I had to be dreaming. Right?

There was never sun in Purgatory. Only rain.

“For you,” a voice called to my side, and I dropped my hand to turn and look.

My heart fell to the pit of my stomach at the sight of him.

Caius.

I don’t know why, but the sight of him had my insides screaming in relief. He was my comfort, my safety, my soul. And to see him here—with me—made me realize that I was scared without knowing it. I didn’t notice that I was alone until I wasn’t.

I ran to him, wrapping my arms around his neck the second I reached him. His arms embraced me as well, and I could feel him bury his face in the crook of my neck, planting gentle kisses on the exposed skin.

Even though I didn’t want to let him go, I managed to pull away just enough to ask a question.

“How is this possible? How is the sun out right now?”

His answer was simple. “Because you always wanted the sun here.”

“But…” I said, still confused. “How?”

“You want the sun, I give you the sun.”

With one arm still around his neck, I slightly turned to look up at the sky. The warmth on my skin felt incredible, but something was off. A piece of me felt different. This whole situation felt… different.

Why do I feel different?

The change in scenery had me pausing, along with the heat on my skin. And the fact that I was here, even though I don’t remember coming here, had me momentarily confused.

And my hands on Caius felt more like a memory than my reality.

This isn’t how I know Purgatory.

I looked back at Caius, who still had his arms snaked around my hips. I studied the feeling of his body warm against mine, and in that moment, I knew that was the only warmth I wanted.Needed.

But why can I feel his warmth?

“Give me the rain back,” I forced out with a smile, which he gladly returned.

With a quick snap of his fingers, the skies turned a deep grey, and heavy rain clouds appeared from nowhere. A drop of rain landed on my cheek, then another on my hand, and soon, the rain was in a consistent downpour.

This was the Purgatory I was more than familiar with. Any hesitancy left in my body was buried beneath my desire to stay with him.

For eternity.

I wrapped my arms around Caius again, letting the rainfall drown me. I kissed him, and the heat of his lips on mine filled my entire body.

“You and me,Meum Caelum,”he whispered against my lips. “It’s only us.”

And I knew, right then and there, there is nothing better than this.
