“Sorry.”

Both Rocco and Gunner chuckle, while I smile and watch her try to remain composed as she eats.

Soup isn’t enough for a bunch of burley bikers, I already know that, but apparently, it’s not enough for Zoe either, because her bowl is empty in a matter of minutes, and she still looks hungry.

Me and the guys chat while they eat, and I slowly feed Zoe my soup, only having the occasional spoonful or bite of the bread. She hardly notices, and when she finally sits back in her chair a little more relaxed, I finish off the small bit left in my bowl.

“I was thinking of heading into the mountains tomorrow to see Old Man Wilson. If I can convince him to give us access to the back roads, maybe we can get our shipments over the mountains and into San Jose that way. It will make the trip up to San Francisco longer, but the Reapers won’t be focusing on the back roads. Just the main ones like they have been.”

As I’m talking, Gunner, who’s sitting across from me, but next to Zoe, holds his phone up for Zoe to see. I try to ignore the smile that lights up Zoe’s face or the way Gunner leans in and whispers something to her.

“That old bastard isn’t going to help us,” Rocco mutters before Zoe turns her attention back to me and butts in.

“What do you mean the Reapers won’t be focusing on the back roads?”

“Nothing for you to worry about, Sugar.” Gunner drawls and I fucking glare at him across the table before turning to Zoe.

“The Reapers have been blocking our attempts at getting our… stuff, up to San Francisco. Every main road we’ve taken north up the coast they’ve been waiting. We tried going up Highway 9 today, but they were waiting for us a little north of San Lorenzo Park.”

“Oh.” Zoe looks surprised that I gave up that information, and so does Gunner for that matter. Rocco doesn’t though. He knows if I’m serious about keeping Zoe, that she’ll need to get used to this life.

“You think you can get the grumpy mountain man to let us pass through his territory?” Rocco asks and I shrug.

“It’s worth a try. Besides. He may not like you, but he fucking loves me.”

Once again, Gunner draws Zoe’s attention away from me, turning his phone to face her, and her eyes widen in surprise.

“Yeah. Yeah. Everyone loves Grayson Black.” Rocco chuckles, and I nod.

“Fucking yeah they do.”

“Oh my gosh, Gunner.” Zoe’s words snap my eyes to her as she leans forward and wipes the corner of his mouth with her finger.

She’s laughing at something, but I don’t fucking care. Red rims my vision as I leap up, and barely refrain from taking the spoon I used for the soup and stabbing it into Gunner’s eye socket.

“The fuck are you doing, woman!” I blurt, dragging her out of her chair and back against my chest. A squeak escapes her, and I point at Gunner as I press my lips to her ear.

“You ready to see his dead body, Princess? Is that what you want?”

“N-no,” she whispers as both Gunner and Rocco watch us. They can’t hear my words, but by Rocco’s expression, he gets it.

Gunner on the other hand looks like he’s about to stand up and offer his assistance to Zoe.

“Then why the fuck would you touch him like that?” I rasp quietly and she struggles against my hold on her, unsuccessfully.

“He had soup in his beard.” She tries to explain, but it means nothing to me.

“Not your fucking problem, Princess. He could have a fucking scorpion in his beard, and you still shouldn’t fucking touch him.”

She stiffens in my hold. “You’re impossible.”

“Maybe. But the next time you fucking lay a finger on him, he will pay the price for your mistake.”

Zoe manages to spin in my arms and then shoves me backward. “Where is the guy from before? From last night?” She hisses between her teeth, not wanting everyone to hear our disagreement.

“I’m right fucking here.”

“Really?” she says it like she can’t believe it and I hold my hands out to show her that I am in fact, right in front of her. “Do you have multiple personalities? Is that it? Maybe you need to see a shrink.”
