Gray licks the shell of my ear before blowing on it, the cold air causes me to shiver in his hold. “Cain likes to—”

“I don’t want to hear it,” I hiss. The words come out harsher than I intended, so I clarify, “This isn’t about him.”

Truthfully, I’m not sure I’m ready for any story that involves Cain’s… umm… extracurriculars. And if I hear even the tamest one right now, I’ll probably want to bolt. Which is something I can’t afford to do.

For one, I owe it to Sasha to be here. Secondly, if I leave, Gray’ll continue to treat me as his delicate princess rather than his equal. And whether I like it or not, if I want to stay with him, I need to toughen the fuck up—preferably fast.

I straighten my spine and roll my shoulders back, my gaze firm on the Reaper tied to the cross in the middle of the room. “I’m ready,” I say in a tone I barely recognize as mine. “Make him fucking pay, Gray.”

Gray jerks my head back and slams his lips to mine. As I gasp in surprise, his tongue delves into my mouth, snaking around mine. The kiss is over as quick as it started, and within seconds, he stands and walks over to Cain.

“Go keep her company,” Gray says, tilting his head toward me. “But don’t fucking touch her.”

Cain holds his hands up in surrender. “Cross my heart and hope the fucker on the cross dies slowly.” Then he smiles innocently. “I can’t promise she won’t touch me, though. And if she does, I’ll need to touch her to get her to stop touching me. So… there’s that.”

When Gray growls and swings at him, Cain dances out of the way and makes his way over to me. As soon as he reaches where I’m sitting, he takes his seat in the neon green beanbag chair next to me.

Wasting no time, he reaches for the bag of popcorn. “Want some?” he offers, holding the bag out for me.

Although I roll my eyes, I take a handful. If nothing else, it’ll keep my hands busy.

I’m so engrossed in watching Gray roll a small steel table over to the cross, that I barely pay attention to Cain until he leans closer.

“By the way, Zoe.”

I jump in surprise, not expecting him to be as close as he is. I’m even more startled when I turn to look at him, finding his facial expression is the most serious I’ve ever seen.

“What?” I squeak.

“If you ever hurt Gray, I’ll personally hunt you down. And trust me, you don’t want that. So be a good girl for him.” Cain’s voice is pitched so low I know Gray can’t hear us.

His words cause anger to erupt in my veins. “What the fuck are you talking about?” I whisper back, angrily. “I don’t care who you are, you have no right to dictate how I should or shouldn’t behave. So let me return the threat, Cain. If you don’t have his back, your wife will know what it’s like to have a dickless husband.”

As soon as the heated words leave me, I want to take them back. Fear overtakes my anger, and my hands shake as I realize I just threatened him.

Rather than take offense, Cain boops my nose. Like, actually fucking pokes it.

“I like you,” he says, smiling wide. “Consider me warned, Princess.”

Ignoring Cain, I turn my attention back to Gray who’s watching us through narrowed eyes. I shake my head to let him know that he doesn’t need to come over.

Gray slowly walks around the cross, looking up at the Reaper. “Ahh, so you’re awake, Brick,” he says conversationally.

“Fuck you, Grayson!” he spits back, shooting murderous glares in Gray’s direction.

“You’re shit out of luck, dude. He doesn’t swing his dick that way,” Cain shouts, looking like he thinks he’s being helpful.

Okay, so maybe Cain is helping because some of the tension in my body bleeds out, and my shoulders are no longer hunched up like I’m trying to get the blades to touch my ears.

“Are you hitting on my man?” I ask, mock-glaring at the crazy fucker next to me. “Because I’m not into sharing.”

Cain cackles. “My wife would have your balls… or rather, your ovaries if you even suggested it.”

I can’t help it, I burst out laughing, and tears gather in my eyes as I let it out. I bet this is why Gray wanted Cain to sit with me. His antics are so ridiculous he’s even managed to make me forget what’s going to happen and why we’re here.

“Cain is right,” Grayson says seriously. “You’re not really my type. But thanks for asking.”

Brick sputters and swears in outrage. “You think you’re so fucking tough, Black? If only you knew what the future holds for you and that cunt you stole from us.”
