“I hear what you’re saying,” I snap, not bothering to look at her. “But from now on, what happens between me and Zoe, stays between us. I’m not discussing this with you again.”

Mama is quiet for a beat, but then she sighs.

“Got it.”

I hear her move, her heels clicking as she retreats back inside the clubhouse.

I hate the idea of Mama getting involved, but I alsodon’thate that Zoe has someone else that is looking out for her.

Unable to handle the misery on Zoe’s expression, I make my way over to her, stepping in front of her and disturbing her dirt drawing, before lowering to my haunches, coming eye to eye with her.

“What are you doing, Princess?”

She shrugs. “Not much to do.”

I nod, waiting for her to say more but it never comes, her blue pools dropping from mine to look at her feet which are now drawing lines in the dirt.

“What’s wrong?” I ask, and again she shrugs.

“Princess, I can’t help you if you don’t talk to me.”

Her eyes lock with mine again, this time with an edge of anger in her gaze. “And how will you help me? I doubt you will let me do anything that I ask.”

My brows shoot up. There’s so much hate in her tone right now. It’s different from the version of Zoe I had yesterday, and up in my cabin.

“Has someone done something?” I ask as the idea that someone has treated her badly makes my blood boil.

Her brows shoot up. “No, Grayson. Unless you are talking about you? If that’s the case, you should get a notepad and a pen, because the list is long.”

Fuck me. We are back to this.

Just when I feel like I’m breaking through, we end up back at square fucking one.

“What has changed since yesterday?” I ask and she shrugs. “Come on, Zo. Talk to me.”

I reach out and take her hand, and her gaze locks on to where we now touch before a big fat tear drops from her eye and onto her lap.

“Hey.” I cup her chin and angle her head up so I can look into her tear-filled eyes. “What can I do to help you?”

“Let me go,” she whispers, and my heart sinks.

“Zoe—”

She shakes her head, interrupting me. “Just for the day. I’ll come back, I promise. I just need… to do something.”

I don’t for a second believe that she will come back willingly. “I can’t let you go.”

“Then, send someone with me. One of the twins. Or both.” She pleads, her blue gaze almost begging. “I just need to do something. It’ll only take an hour. Two tops.”

“What is it you want to do?” I ask and she huffs.

“Does it matter? Do you have to know everything?”

“Yes,” I state unapologetically. “I’m not even going to consider your request unless you tell me where you want to go.”

She glares at me, and I can just imagine the thoughts running through her head right now. My imminent death is probably the most dominant one.

“I want to go to the cemetery, to visit with Leslie and mom.”
