“I don’t know if I trust you.”

“Really?” I ask, gesturing to the graves down the hill. “You seemed to trust me before when you were falling apart. You let me hold you. Carry you. Fuck we even had a fucking moment for fuck’s sake. Until you went and ruined it.” I shake my head in frustration. “I think you do fucking trust me, Princess. I think the person you don’t trust is yourself.”

Zoe

“Amoment?”Iscoff, finally reacting to Grayson’s little speech. “We didn’t have a moment, Grayson. I had a breakdown, and you manipulated the situation to get your hands on me.”

He chuckles darkly. “Is that what you need to tell yourself, Princess? Are you that scared of the truth?”

I roll my eyes. “One might be a coincidence. But two or more is a pattern. If this was the first time you did something like that, I might have believed you. Not anymore, though. If I once thought there was something redeemable or good inside you, now I know there isn’t.”

The look he gives me can only be described as anger mixed with incredulity. His nostrils flare like an angry bull, and his eyes turn as dark as night. Every muscle and tendon in his body is coiled tight, ready to strike, to lash out.

“Is that so, Princess?”

I shake my head, unwilling to continue this ridiculous back and forth just for his amusement. And I know that’s what he’s doing. Like the big, bad predator, he’s playing with his victim—me.

“Doesn’t matter. Just take me back to my cage,” I seethe, not even bothering to mask my anger.

Without a word, we both get on the bike, but before Grayson can start it, someone calls out.

“Zoe? Zoe Miller, is that you?”

Not recognizing the voice, I remove the helmet and look behind me.

“Adam?” I gasp, surprised to see the all-star athlete here, of all places. Without thinking, I jump back off the bike.

Before I can run to him, Grayson stops me with a hand on my arm. “Don’t go to him, Princess,” he growls darkly.

“Fuck you,” I spit. “I can go say hi to my friend if I want to.”

He tightens his grip on my arm, and when I look at Adam, it’s clear he’s noticed. He frowns and pulls his phone from his back pocket.

“Are you okay, Zoe?” Adam shouts like we’re miles and not mere feet apart.

Grayson slowly climbs off his bike, positioning himself at my back. “She’s fine,” he insists unkindly.

Then he places his hands on my hips, pulling me closer to him. Possessive ass.

“Tell him you’re fine, Princess,” he whispers directly into my ear as he bends down. “Tell him you’re fine or there’s going to be a problem.”

Despite the danger in his tone, it’s delicious anticipation that causes me to shiver when he gently bites the shell of my ear.

“Tell him,” he coos. “Tell him that you’remine.”

The last words break the magic keeping me in place, and I scoff. “I’m not fuckingyours.”

“Like hell you’re not,” he growls angrily.

Ignoring him, I take full advantage of the fact that I can see Adam recording us, and I use it to shirk out of Grayson’s hold. Without thinking, I run over to him. The closer I get, the more elated I feel. Seeing someone from my old life is the affirmation I didn’t even know I needed.

It’s proof I used to have another life, and that there’s a world out there waiting for me to conquer it.

“It’s really you,” I laugh as I throw my arms around him.

He hugs me back, lifts me up and swings me around like he used to. “Zoe Miller, as I live and breathe,” he laughs back. As he lets go of me, his expression turns serious. “What happened to you? There are rumors about the Cruz Kings kidnapping you.”

I scrunch up my nose. “No one’s kidnapped me, Adam,” I fire back.
