“Ah-ha. Here are thy men returned from war.” He sing-songs as he steps in the doorway wearing a grin. It only lasts momentarily when he sees our expressions, and his face drops. “What the fuck happened?”

Not a second after the words pass his lips is he shoved aside by the horde of women trailing behind him. Darting into the room first, Alana’s eyes lock on Slasher, ready to go to him until she spots Cara huddled on the floor with me.

“Cara?” she asks, her face morphing with pain as she takes in Cara’s tear-stained cheeks.

Dropping to the floor with us, Alana wraps her arms around Cara while the other Cruz Cunts file in, all silent, their eyes darting around to take in the men, finally realizing who’s missing.

My eyes remain on the door as I wait for my princess to appear, but after a long beat, I realize she isn’t here.

“Where’s Zoe?” I ask, releasing Cara into the care of her Cunts before standing.

“She’s coming with Rhiannon.” Rose answers as she hugs Cara.

“Rhiannon?” I frown, fucking confused.

“Yeah, when I overheard on the police scanner that a bunch of Cruz Kings turned up at the hospital, I knew I had to get the girls here to you fellas. Zoe had been napping or some shit, so Rhiannon offered to bring her, so we didn’t have to wait.”

Frowning, I glance at Tex who offers me a shrug, and we all listen as Munroe fills them in on what happened with Rocco.

Something about Rhiannon driving Zoe here doesn’t sit well with me.

Rhiannon is… different. She’s rarely charitable, and last I knew, she wasn’t that keen about my princess. They’ve never hung out like Alana and Zoe have, but I guess under the circumstances, it would be normal for Rhiannon to step up and help.

I pace as I wait for the girls to arrive. After ten minutes have passed, I snatch Alana’s phone off her and call Zoe’s, but it goes straight to voicemail like it’s not even switched on.

“What’s wrong?” Cain asks, coming to stand before me.

“Something’s not right. Zoe should be here by now.”

Cain looks down at his watch and frowns too. “Let me call one of the Diamonds and get them to check the club.”

I nod, pacing again as Cain steps out into the hall and makes the call, which is when a nurse steps into the room.

“Mrs. King?” she asks, looking amongst the women in the room, and Cara stands from the floor, quickly.

“Yes. I’m Mrs. King.”

The nurse smiles warmly. “We have your husband set up in his room now. You are welcome to see him.”

Nodding quickly, Cara steps forward, but she halts, spinning until her eyes meet mine. “Grayson. I need you to come with me.”

“Yeah. Of course.” I nod, moving to her side, and together, we follow the nurse out.

Passing Cain in the hallway, I shove my finger into his chest.

“Come and get me when Zoe arrives.”

“Yeah, man. Consider it done.” Cain smiles, but fuck. Why does that smile not reach his eyes?

Cara and I follow the nurse to a room that isn’t a typical hospital room, the sign by the door saying, Intensive Care Unit.

“Mr. King will be monitored in this room until we rouse him from sedation in a couple of days.” The nurse explains in a soft and soothing tone. “I’m sorry it’s not a more comfortable space for you, but it is the required space for your husband right now.”

Cara nods at the nurse, more tears springing from her eyes as she stares at the closed door, before pushing it open.

Following behind, I nearly run into her when she stops abruptly, her hand slapping over her mouth as a choked sob escapes her, and my eyes follow her line of sight to fall on my friend.

Rocco would look like he’s sleeping if it weren’t for the tubes protruding from his mouth and nose. Aside from that, he looks more lifelike than he did earlier, lying on the ground beside the Reapers’ barn.
