She cocked her hip to touch his. “So are you.”

“Oh yeah. What makes you think so?”

“I haven’t known you long, but so far, I’ve seen you stop to help a fallen stranger on the mountain, handle a terrified father with authority and compassion, and put yourself between me and danger. I find that last one infuriating?—”

“But gallant and sweet?”

A smile tilted her lips. “Maybe a little, but don’t let it go to your head. I’ve also watched you talk down a gunman.”

“I wasn’t so successful with that. People come here to be healed. Not to get held hostage or hit with a bullet. I’m responsible for everyone in this hospital.”

“So you’ve told me on numerous occasions. It explains why you wanted to take the quickest route to keep everyone safe. Karl told me you were planning on paying half of the ransom yourself because you have a personal agenda when it comes to the trial.”

“Karl has a big mouth, but he’s correct. I have money from an investment that wound up being very lucrative. The hospital needed it. End of story.”

“That’s noble of you.”

“I’m no hero, Rosalie. I didn’t choose my responsibilities. They chose me. I’m just doing what’s expected and what’s right, including protecting what I care about. As of yesterday, that includes doing whatever I can to stop a terrorist.”

“I didn’t see anything framed in your office qualifying you as law enforcement.”

“Not enough wall space, Snow Angel.” And no use hanging proof of his graduation from the police academy if he’d never worked as a cop. “But I’m a good shot. Who do you think taught Julia to shoot?”

She smiled instead of getting irritated he’d called her Snow Angel and raised her eyebrows. “That’s impressive. What other superpowers don’t I know about?”

He spun her around and pinned her back against his chest, one hand wrapped tightly around her waist, the other loosely around her throat. “I can hold my own in hand-to-hand.”

“I could escape if I tried.”

He dipped his head to her ear and pulled her tighter against him. “Then why aren’t you trying?”

“I don’t want to hurt you.” She wiggled her backside against him.

“I’m a doctor, sweetheart. I can take care of myself.” But if she kept grinding her tight ass into his cock, the ache to claim her would skyrocket to a ten on the pain scale.

“Even though we’re working together on this case, I won’t let you do anything dangerous. How many times do I have to remind you I’m the one with the badge?”

He spun them both and backed her against the window. “I’m not anybody’s sidekick.”

She threaded her hands through his hair and around to the base of his neck. “I don’t want a sidekick. I want your hospital to recover and don’t want anyone else to get hurt, including you.”

“Do you know what I want? I want you to kiss me like you did the night we met.” He couldn’t wait another second longer for the mind-altering drug he desired.

Her jaw dropped, and she tensed as if thinking about her next move. A few heartbeats later, she feathered her lips against his as she dropped her hand and brushed his erection. “Do you want me to kiss you like this?”

He groaned at the sweet coupling of cherries and chocolate in his mouth. “That’s one of the places I want your pretty lips. I’ll have to wait to experience what else you can do with that sweet mouth until we’re behind locked doors.”

“Bossyanddirty. Is that one of your skills I know nothing about?”

“One of many, Snow Angel.”

The door opened. Cannon cursed as Rosalie jumped away and reached for her gun. Wulf appeared, his sharp gaze roaming the stairwell. “Just making sure you two are okay. Stay together. There are a lot of people out there who will stab you in the back if you let your guard down.”

She stiffened. “I never let my guard down.”

“We all do at one point or another, Agent Zenner.”

Cannon touched a fingertip to Rosalie’s chin as the door closed. “What’s wrong? You’re paler than when Malgor’s stick figures exploded.”
