She shook her head. “Nothing.”

“Bullshit. I’m a human lie detector, thanks to dealing with my sister. What did Wulf say to upset you? And don’t give me thatI can take care of myselfcrap.”

“I…” She smoothed her hands down her dark suit pants. “I just don’t trust the guy. Why does Julia lie to you?”

Cannon opened the door and held it wide. “She promises me she’ll take it easy, but then does stupid shit like shooting a man and then getting shot herself instead of going home like I’d instructed.”

“Why does she need to listen to what you say?” Rosalie walked past Cannon and into the hall. “My mother tells me all the time to quit the job that killed my father and become a teacher like my cousin, but should I listen to her?”

He fell into step next to Rosalie and guided her toward the executive suite with his hand on her back. “Sounds like she doesn’t want to lose you, too. I get that because I don’t want to lose my sister.”

Rosalie stopped and turned to him. “How did your father die? Was it in the line of duty?”

“Fucking cancer killed my father. I won’t let it kill my sister. She’s a patient in the drug trial that’s in danger of being moved to another hospital. I’m not letting Julia be a guinea pig miles away. She needs to be treatedhere.”

Rosalie sucked in air as Cannon’s personal agenda hit her square in the heart. “I’m so sorry. About everything.”

He rubbed his stubbled jaw. “You aren’t the only one chasing a killer.”

“What can I do to help?”

“End this.”

“I will, but what can I do right now to help you? Not the hospital, not the patients, not even your sister. What can I do to makeyoufeel better, if only for a little while?”

SIXTEEN

Cannon’s bright-blue gaze churned into a river of indigo lava. “My office. Now.”

Rosalie’s pulse beat at her neck as another pounded between her legs. For the first time, her old wound tingled in joyous anticipation.

Within seconds, she found more joy pressed up against the wall inside Cannon’s locked office. His cock, long and rock solid, jutted into her belly as he kissed her hard and deep. Like the laser-focused man she’d come to know, he tugged off her jacket and unbuttoned her shirt, exposing the white lacy bra she wore underneath.

He stepped back and admired his efficient work. “Beautiful.”

The compliment soared through her body, and she shook. A flash later, his mouth claimed hers again, and her shirt and bra joined her jacket on the floor. She speared her fingers into his thick waves, holding on tight as he trailed kisses down to her chin…her neck, nipping, licking, and mumbling about cherries and sunshine. When he sucked a hard nipple between his teeth, her body celebrated like it hadn’t felt the sun for days.

“Cannon.” She gripped his dress shirt and tugged him against her.

He wrapped his hands around her waist as her sensitive nipples brushed against his white jacket. The friction elicited a need that curled down her belly lower and lower until it writhed like a carnal creature and stole her breath.

His hands dropped to his side. “Did I hurt your ribs?”

“No.” They’d hurt like blazes earlier, but Cannon’s touch healed her more effectively than any pain medication.

Sinking to his knees, he placed a light kiss on the bruised area. “Does this hurt?”

She moaned low, relishing in the delicious spirals heating her core and the sight of this strong man kneeling before her.

His chuckle rumbled against her skin. “Was that from pain or pleasure?”

“Definitely pleasure.” The only part of her body that hurt—no, ached—was the juncture where she wanted his hands.

His mouth.

The unforgiving length she’d felt against her belly.

Her body acted on her thoughts, and she tilted her hips. His nostrils flared. The dominant set of his jaw revved her anticipation to a painful level. In a motion as smooth as when he’d removed her jacket and blouse, he undid her belt and zipper. He paused and found her gaze before he yanked down her pants and dipped his fingers inside her damp panties. As his thumb grazed the sensitive bundle of nerves, she flexed her hips again in a not-so-silent invitation.
