“Reid’s uncle used to be the Chief of Police,” Micah answered. Reid was one of Micah’s best buds and a retired Elite who’d found the love of a lifetime like my brother had.

Silence settled for a moment.

“JJ—James Jenner,” I spoke up as soon as the thought crossed my mind. “Kellen’s man was a detective before they moved up to Maine. Maybe he can help us find some shit on this asshole.”

Micah nodded, his eyes lighting as he pulled his cell from his pocket.

A sense of finally doing something good trickled through my insides, easing my tension the slightest bit. I actually inhaled without my chest wanting to cave in on itself.

My brother put through a call and set it on speaker.

Kellen answered after the third ring. “Micah! What’s up?”

“A shit ton,” Micah muttered. “Is your man nearby?”

“Yeah—hold on.” Kellen’s voice had lost its jolly tone. “We’re down here visiting Mason and Jasper this weekend. Everything okay?”

“Not really.”

“Shit. Mind if I listen in?” he asked, a door closing and another reopening in the background.

“Not at all,” Micah said. “Feel free to have Mason and Jasper do the same. We’ll take whatever ideas any of you might have.”

“It’s Micah,” Kellen said, his voice muffed. “Sounds like some shit hit the fan. Gonna put him on speaker.”

“Micah?” JJ greeted with a question in his tone. “What’s going on?”

I fought to sit still and sip my coffee while Micah caught the two retired EEMM employees and their partners up on what Elite faced.

No one spoke for a few seconds once Micah went quiet.

“I was hoping that with being a detective, you might give us some direction on what to do, JJ,” Micah finally said, his voice sounding unsure for the first time in his life.

My world shifted slightly off-balance. Since when did the golden boy not have his shit together? The fact he didn’t already have a plan in place was more than troublesome to my already worried brain.

“I don’t have the kind of contacts you’re going to need for something like this,” JJ finally said. “And unfortunately, no one on the force owes me any favors I could call in to cross a morally gray line it seems like you might need.”

“Fuck.” Micah scrubbed a hand over his face.

“I’m sorry,” JJ tacked on, obviously having heard the unusual stress in my brother’s voice.

“Don’t worry about it.” Micah exhaled loudly. “I’ll figure something out—I always do. Kellen, you guys coming over tomorrow for the game?”

“Yeah, we’ll be there,” Kellen replied.

“Mason? Jasper?” Micah questioned.

“Wouldn’t miss it,” Mason assured us, his tone calmer than everyone. I expected he leaned against Jasper, soaking in the peace of his younger man and soulmate.

Envy trickled through my mind, shifting my thoughts toward Matteo.

I sighed, wishing I could just sit at Teach’s feet, close my eyes, and fucking rest.

“Well.” Micah rubbed his hands down his thighs after hanging up. “There’s nothing else we can do for now. Drake, you’re booked for tonight?”

“Yeah,” my best friend said.

“Zack?” Micah asked.
