“Just eye candy for me tonight, thank fuck.”

My brother turned to the final employee, who’d sat silent since I’d arrived. “Jimmy?”

He shook his blond head.

Micah nodded and stood. “Every one of you had better be on your best behavior, got it?”

Fuck, he sounded like Pop.

“No funny business,” Micah continued, “and if you catch a whiff of anything that stirs your sixth sense, call it in, and I’ll take care of ending the night’s contract.”

Both Drake and Zack nodded.

Drake clasped my shoulder before standing. “You need anything…”

I nodded, expecting he could figure out I might require a night on the town with a bottle or two of vodka after my brother reamed me out.

Chapter 16

Sean

I’d avoided Micah’s gaze until the door closed behind Drake, leaving us alone. Jasmine tinkered around in the kitchen outside earshot, so at least I wouldn’t be too embarrassed by whatever my brother had to say.

Stomach in knots and guts once more churning, I waited for Micah to start in on me—how I’d somehow missed red flags he wouldn’t have. How I hadn’t done enough to protect Elite.

“You’re stretched too thin,” Micah stated firmly.

Not what I’d been expecting at all. What happened to I’m disappointed in you or you fucked up?

“What?”

“Have you looked in the mirror lately?” Micah’s forehead furrowed. “You’re exhausted, Sean. Worn down. There’s bags under your eyes, and you’ve obviously lost weight from burning the candle at both ends.”

I rubbed a weary hand over said eyes, feeling every damned thing he’d stated. While I hadn’t stepped on a scale since the last time I’d been to the gym, my tight jeans had felt a little loose when I’d put them on the night before.

And here comes the part where he tells me to go home and never come back.

“You need to give up the partying and focus on work and college.”

“That’s all I am devoting my every waking hour to,” I argued, frowning at his comment on my lack of discipline he’d assumed.

“You haven’t been out with Drake lately?”

“Three weeks ago.”

Micah’s eyebrows shot up. “Seriously?”

I nodded, baffled by how the conversation went when I’d been sure Micah would can my ass or at least scream at me like Pop would have done.

Jasmine walked into the living room, disrupting our private conversation. She went straight to Micah, and he stood, his expression growing concerned as he eyed her. With her back to me, she leaned into him, letting out a heavy sigh. He wrapped his arms around her, nuzzling against the side of her head.

“Okay?” he whispered.

“Still feel sick.”

“Maybe we should stay home tonight,” he said.

She shook her head against his neck. “No. It’s been too long,” she stated, her voice muffled from her face smooshed against his skin. “We need it. I need it.”
