Page 85 of Three Reasons

Between that letter and Micah’s visit?

My teary eyes had been opened to a future where I could move forward in whatever way I wanted.

First, fuck Pop and all his expectations no one would ever meet. He could go suck a goddamned egg and choke for all I cared.

Second?

I sat down at my desk, swiped my homework into the trash can, and wrote up a brief email that granted me the freedom to pursue Matteo.

Chapter 33

Matteo

“Professor D’Angelo, this is Dean Sommerfeld.”

My guts clenched up tight at the voice coming through my cell. There was only one reason he would be reaching out to me at eight on a Monday night. “Good evening, Dean. How can I help you?”

“Well.” He sounded put out, which tripled my heart rate. “I received two emails in the last hour, both of which pertained to you.”

“Oh?” I croaked, bracing myself for what I had feared from the beginning. Sean Fox had proven to be trouble time and again, and my poor choices had finally come to bite me in the ass.

“The first was from someone on campus. They stated some very disturbing accusations pertaining to you and Sean Fox.”

Exactly as I’d expected.

I sank onto my couch, eyes closing as I ran a hand through my hair. “I can explain?—”

“The second email,” Dean Sommerfeld spoke over my mumble, “was from Mr. Fox himself. He’s dropped out of school when there’s only three weeks left before the semester ends.”

He what?

“I don’t know what happened between the two of you,” the dean continued, unaware of the riotous emotions coursing through me, “and since he’s no longer a student at our college, I’d prefer to keep it that way—unless there’s some sort of legal fallout ahead of us?”

I swallowed hard. “Definitely not, sir. No. There’s nothing to concern yourself with.”

“Good. No harm, no foul, then.”

All things holy…

“Correct, sir,” I managed to croak.

“I have a nice glass of Chianti with my name on it and no time or energy to waste on gossip. I hope you have a good evening, Professor D’Angelo.”

He hung up before I could bid him the same.

No curses spewed from my lips, and no thoughts raced through my befuddled brain. I sat and stared, unseeing and baffled.

Sean…

Blinking, I swiped my cell back to life to call him but hesitated. He’d texted about his plans with his brother, but I wanted answers, goddamnit.

Me: Why did you quit?

I shot off my text, realizing I hadn’t included any context or explanation of how I knew.

Sean: Because I’m perfect the way I am and don’t need some goddamned piece of paper to prove otherwise.

Laughter tore from me, my heart racing for a whole other reason.
