Adrian was back at his desk, typing away.

She took a deep breath and started to dial.

It rang once.

This is stupid. Why would she pick up a call from an unknown number?

It rang a second time.

Maybe we have enough to shut away Victor already. What if I’m just wasting precious time, and he’s already preparing a counteroffensive?

It rang a third time.

Hasn’t she been through enough without me intruding?

She looked at Adrian, hopefully, as the fourth ring sounded. He smiled encouragingly at her, and she hoped he was proud of her.

Then she wondered how she had fallen so far that she was so concerned about the approval of a man she hadn’t even known until mere months ago. That was the moment it really hit her … she really was in love with Adrian, more than she had ever loved Darius. Darius had been special to her, and she had cared for him deeply. She probably would have been happy with him if they had mated.

But he would never have been her fated mate.

The thought threw her off, as unexpected and intrusive as it was. She nearly forgot the task at hand, distracted by her profound realization. She jumped, startled when an answering machine burst through her thoughts.

“The person you’re trying to reach is unavailable. Please leave a message after the beep.”

Impulsively, she ended the call, hitting the button before the beep could sound.

She had failed.

She knew it wasn’t in her control, but she had still failed.

Apparently, whoever owned the phone number hadn’t even bothered to record a message, so she couldn’t even confirm if it was her grandmother’s number.

She grimaced. Adrian’s eyes were unmoving from hers, critically dissecting her. She knew he was picking apart her failure.

“Did you leave a message?”

She shook her head. “There wasn’t a machine,” she lied.

But Adrian had super-hearing. All shifters did. So there was no way he hadn’t heard the robotic voice on the other end.

“Ah. Well, maybe she’ll call back anyway.”

It seemed like a long shot.

More likely, she had failed the pack. She began to think about the look on Victor’s face when he ultimately won, and she clenched her fists until her palms started to turn white.

“Hey! Take it easy.”

She remembered that she couldn’t very easily hide her emotional state from Adrian. He could see and feel everything from the anger overpowering her to the adrenaline surging through her body. It was the curse and blessing of having a fated mate.

“Even if this doesn’t work, we’ll figure something out. We always do.”

Luna simply nodded. “Let me try one more time,” she said, reluctantly taking her phone out of her pocket again.

She wasn’t sure what she expected.

She dialed the number and pressed the phone to her ear but was surprised when she heard a busy tone. There was a call on the other line for her.
