It was from the number she had just dialed.

“Hello?” she answered calmly, completely uncertain who she was speaking to.

“Hi. I received a call from this number.”

To her utter disappointment, it was a middle-aged man who had answered the phone.

Luna was tempted to hang up then and there.

With no idea of where to begin explaining anything, she gulped and inhaled.

“Hi,” she said. “My grandmother … I only discovered she was alive just now, and I was wondering if you knew her.”

Nothing. Luna wondered if the man had hung up.

But she was mistaken.

“Hang on a moment,” the man replied. On the other line, stairs creaked. A door knob turned, and an old door screamed open.

“Oh, good. You’re up.”

Luna heard the man talking in the background. She had prepared herself to be disappointed but realized that she wasn’t breathing properly. Adrian rubbed her arm gently, but she barely registered the motion.

“Couldn’t really sleep with all that racket.” An elderly woman spoke over the phone in the background.

“There’s a phone call for you.”

“Who is it?”

A pause.

“Well, give it here,” the elderly woman said.

As the phone changed hands, Luna could hear a fumbling crackle.

“Hello?”

Luna tried to catch her breath at the sound of the elderly woman’s voice.

“I think it’s another crank phone call, Jonathan,” the elderly woman said.

“Hi!” Luna’s voice cracked. She needed water.

The elderly woman hesitated. “To whom am I speaking?”

Luna’s heart beat so fast she was ready to pass out. She couldn’t fail this time. “It’s a long story, and please don’t hang up. But I think you might be my grandmother.”

Another pause.

“Jonathan, I’ll take this. You can go.”

Luna took a deep, gasping breath. She heard creaking floorboards, followed by the sound of the loud door opening and closing.

Another moment of silence.

“So, did Victor put you up to this?” the elderly woman asked.

Luna gripped her cell phone tighter. She stammered. “No! Or at least, I don’t think so.”
