Page 88 of My Rise

I raise an eyebrow. “What are you suggesting?”

He bumps his shoulder against mine. “Embrace the shadows once more. We know the rules of this world. We've thrived in it before. We can do it again.”

I smile as I consider his words. They’re deliciously tempting.

“Jesse, we can't afford unnecessary risks. We need calculated moves.”

He places his lips against my ear. “Calculated, yes, but not timid. We strike fear into their hearts and make them regret underestimating us.”

I smirk. “You've always been the one for bold moves, Jesse.”

He winks at me. “That's why you keep me around, isn't it?”

His words resonate with a truth I can’t deny. Jesse's confidence and his unyielding determination become a source of strength in the midst of our uncertainties. As we venture deeper into the shadows, the delicate equilibrium of power and love in my life faces yet another test, and Jesse's persuasive influence becomes a guiding force in our turbulent journey.

“We’ll make a move soon,” I murmur. “Don’t you worry about that.”

“Oh, with you, I doubt little, and neither should you.”

He places his hand on his tented pants.

The Black Lotus usually clears out by three in the morning or so, but tonight, or rather this morning, it’s four by the time I leave.

Alex comes over and walks me to my door. “Do you mind if I follow you home?” he asks.

“Go ahead,” I tell him.

As of late, he’s often done that. In a fashion, he’s become my bodyguard in addition to my Head of Security. Yet anotherreason why I need Dylan where he is, although maybe he could see about working for the mayor one night less a week?

As I drive home, I realize that the aftermath of the chaos surrounding Fortune Oasis has left me at a crossroads. I’m grappling with the complexities of my relationships and the delicate balance between love and power.

I’m so glad Alex is coming home, and tonight, I definitely need solace and guidance.

I flash my lights before I park, and Alex parks his car beside mine in the driveway. I wait for him to approach my car before climbing out of mine.

Without a word, I take his hand in mine and lead him to my front door. I unlock the door, and we head inside.

Alex shuts the door behind us and locks it.

I sit on the couch and pat beside me. He takes his place next to me.

“I’m glad you let me come in tonight,” he murmurs.

“Me too.” I hesitate.

He laughs and tucks some of my hair behind my ear. “We don’t have to go to the bedroom.”

I take his hand and hold it on top of my leg. “For now, I just want to talk.”

“I’m all ears,” he says earnestly.

I hesitate. “I don't know how much more of this I can handle, Alex. Everything's falling apart, and I can't seem to find solid ground.”

He squeezes my hand. “I would disagree with you there, but even if you’re right, we've been through worse, Vanessa. We're stronger together.”

I stare into his eyes. “But what about us? Can we navigate through this without losing what we have?”

Does he know that I’m not just talking about us as in him and me? But me and all of them?
