Opening her door, I extend my hand and she puts her gloved one in mine. “Oh my God. This is the park where we rode the Ferris Wheel together.” Mackenzie’s eyes are wide as she gazes around before landing on me.

“It sure is.” Pulling her against me, I wrap my arms around her. Holding her in my arms is perfection. She’s my home. My safe space.

“Chase,” she breathes, puffs of white air blowing from her lips into the cold night air. “Is the Ferris Wheel operating?”

“Why do you think I brought you here?” I lean down, kissing her lips. “Ready to fly with me, angel?”

“Always, Chase. I’ve descended into the bowels of hell with you.” She gives me a tight smile, indicating our time with Orpheus, Rosario, and the rest of the cult. “Now, I’m ready to soar to the heavens.”

“I float every time your eyes meet mine. And when you kiss me, my heart pounds frantically. Holding you in my arms is nirvana.” Stepping back, I grab her hand, guiding her to the park entrance. “But soaring with you on the Ferris Wheel is coming full circle.”

The smile she flashes me lights up every nerve in my body. “This time, when we fly together, I want your lips on mine.” A blush colors her cheeks. “And your hands between my thighs.”

I groan, my dick immediately hardening. “I’m gonna make you soar to new heights when I make you come on the Ferris Wheel, angel.” As we get closer to a crowd of people near the entrance, I whisper in her ear, “I won’t let you fall.”

“Too late. I fell for you a long time ago.”

I squeeze her gloved hand in mine. “I fell for you first.” Winking at her, I pay the admission fee, and then we wind through the crowd, heading to the Ferris Wheel.

Mackenzie’s face is enraptured as we settle on the seat. “Two things. I definitely want to enroll in cyber school with you to finish our senior year. I also want us to work at Cozy Corner Café.”

“Okay. But you need to agree to two things as well.”

Mackenzie bites her lip, excitement dancing in her eyes. “Tell me.”

“First, you need to pass your driver’s test and get your license. Second, I want us to move into an apartment after graduation.”

“As long as it’s Delilah friendly, I’m game. But if the apartment building doesn’t accept her, we can’t move in.”

I scoff at her. “Kenz, as if I’d move anywhere without you and Delilah. Although, I think your dad is going to have withdrawals, and not just from us moving out. He’s thrilled to doggy sit Delilah tonight.”

“We need to get him a dog. One that Delilah loves so they can have playdates.”

“Agreed.” I squeeze her hand. “Do you accept my terms?”

“Absolutely.”

Her fingers wrap around mine, transporting me to that attic. She clung to me like I was her life raft, keeping her afloat, as fear, confusion, and uncertainty flowed from every fiber of her being. Now, she’s holding my hand like she’s never going to let go, her lips curled up into that smile she reserves only for me, amber eyes staring at me with unadulterated love and devotion.

The past and present collide as my mind bounces from our first Ferris Wheel ride to the first ritual in that wretched church where I begged her to focus on me, distracting her by making her relive the first time I made her fly.

Tonight, we are coming full circle. Only this time, we’ll fly together, focused on the present and building a brighter future together while healing from the trauma of our past. The trauma will always be with us, a part of us, but it doesn’t define who we are. We aren’t our pain, our scars, the festering internal wounds that leap up without warning, trying to drag us back into the darkness. We are Chase and Mackenzie, two people who made it through hell, refusing to let it change us. We are still the same, but different.

As if Mackenzie can read my thoughts, she smiles at me. “Trauma does not define us. It’s a part of us, but it isn’t who we are. We are so much more than that. We’re still the same people we were before, yet we’re different.” Exhaling a breath, she looks at me, before her gaze lifts to the darkened sky. “Like you, I refuse to become bitter and cynical because of those horrific moments we endured. That’s what they are: snippets in time that, while it was the most horrific thing either of us ever endured, it didn’t break us.” Squeezing my hand, her gaze meets mine. “We refused to be broken. Unified, we stood in solidarity, facing the enemy, bending but not breaking. The adversity we faced didn’t change us into something we’re not. In many ways, it matured us and because we grew through our pain together, it made us better.”

Cupping her face, I reverently whisper, “Goddamn, angel. I’m so fucking proud of you. The growth and maturity you display, the way you aren’t afraid to be raw and completely open with me, trusting me organically and wholly, is genuinely beautiful.” I shake my head, in awe of her. “Kenz, your words tonight moved me more than anything I’ve ever heard. Nothing anyone has ever said can come close.”

Her hand lifts, cupping my face. “I mean every word, Chase.” Breath hitching, she shakes her head, a slow smile spreading over her face. “I don’t know what the hell I did to make an amazing man like you fall so damn hard for me. But I’m sure as hell glad you did. You’re entrenched so deeply inside my heart and soul, I sometimes forget we are two people with two hearts and souls, tarnished as they are, because we feel like one.”

I swallow hard, love pouring from every fiber of my being. “One mind, one body, one heart, and one soul.”

Our rapid breathing is in tandem as we stare into each other’s eyes, the past, present, and future colliding in her gaze. I see forever in her eyes.

As the Ferris Wheel begins moving, our mouths collide. Her gloved fingers curl into the material of my jacket, pulling me closer.

“I love you, Chase. So fucking much,” she hoarsely rasps. “You make every day special.”

Groaning against her lips, I whisper, “I’m doing my job, then. I want to make every day special for you, angel. Lord knows you deserve it.” Ripping off my gloves, my hands slide down the sleeves of her coat, moving to the waistband of her leggings. I haven’t forgotten what she said in the parking lot. As I slide beneath the waistband of her pants, then the elastic of her panties, I moan into her mouth. desperate to feel her soaked pussy gripping my fingers.
