Although she’s pinned between Orpheus and me, Mackenzie manages to free a hand and slaps Orpheus across the face. “Stop it, you fucking bastard,” she screams.

As all the fluid from the needle is drained from the syringe, Orpheus removes his hand from me before slapping Mackenzie so hard that her head flies to the side. She gasps, her body slumping against mine as her anger is replaced by fear.

“You fucker.” I lunge for Orpheus, but whatever they’ve injected me with slows my reactions. His fist cracks against my face as he lets out a delighted chuckle.

“The two of you are going to be a joy to break. Feisty and stupid. I like it.”

I open my mouth, but Mackenzie’s whimper draws my attention to the needle Rosario has plunged into her neck.

Fuck.My limbs feel like heavy logs as I reach for Rosario’s arm, but Orpheus smacks it away like I’m an annoying fly.

“Children, behave.” His voice is a threatening growl.

When Rosario pulls the needle from Mackenzie’s neck, I wrap my arms around her, clinging to Mackenzie’s petite form. I stare at Orpheus defiantly, refusing to let go of her.

Orpheus releases an amused laugh. “Hold her for now, boy. You won’t be able to touch her soon.”

Dammit.Whatever they gave me is making it hard to keep my eyes open. Rather than waste my energy fighting with the giant asshole standing in front of the trunk, I use it to hold Mackenzie.

“Chase,” Mackenzie’s voice murmurs my name. “Don’t let me go.” Her words leave her in a slurred rush, but they’re loud and clear to me.

My eyes are locked on Orpheus as I press my lips against her temple. “Never.”

CHASE

Orpheus slammed the trunk lid shut. The sound of his and Rosario’s footsteps against the gravel grew fainter. Relief fills me that he didn’t kill me and dispose of my body.

Mackenzie’s slim form trembles against me, her fear palpable. Although I try to squeeze her tighter to offer her comfort, my arms refuse to work because of whatever drug they injected me with. I’m not sure they’re still wrapped around her since I have no feeling in them.

“Chase?” Her voice is groggy and thick, exhaustion weighing over her as it is me.

“Yeah, sweetie?” I slur, my voice raspy.

“We… We’re in this… together. R-Right?”

“Always, angel.”

The darkness pulls me under before I’m sure my words provide her any relief.

My eyelids flicker, a sliver of light edging my vision. A stabbing pain rolls through my head. It’s as though someone has taken the blade of a knife and jammed it straight through my skull.

Fuck.I attempt to lift my hands to my face, but they don’t move.

My mouth is as dry as cotton as I peel my lips apart. I blink a few more times, willing my brain to process and make sense of things. Grainy images whirl inside my head, too fast to make sense of them.

Orpheus and Rosario opened the trunk of the car. They injected me, then Mackenzie, with something. Then everything goes blank.

My eyes go wide.Where’s Mackenzie?

My head jerks to the right, searching for her, but the agony rolling through me makes me nauseous.Dammit. I suck in a deep breath, tasting dust before I exhale.

Closing my eyes, I take slow breaths in and out before slowly peeling one eye open at a time. A blade of light swings over me, slicing through my skull and cleaving it in half. Agony courses through me yet again, making me grit my teeth so hard I’m surprised they don’t crack and shatter.

Sucking in a deep breath, I hold it a moment before exhaling.Come on, Chase. Get your shit together. Where is she?

My body is not cooperating with me. The effects of the drugs linger, making it hard to think or move. Nausea rises in my throat, even though I haven’t eaten in who knows how long. What day is it anyway?
