I glare at her, my hand reaching for the cup. My eyes latch onto the ugly abrasions and lacerations around my wrists to the swelling in my hand. Freezing, I suck in a breath, the violent memories assaulting me. They hold me captive, threatening to drag me back into the darkness. No. Fight it. You need to find Chase.
Taking a few deep breaths in and out, I nod at Rosario, who moves the cup back to my lips. I sip as she instructed, my eyes darting around. I nearly spit the water back into the cup when I spot his familiar dark hair. My gaze slides down the back of Chase’s head, sorrow, pain, and anger welling inside me when I see the welts on his skin.
“Chase.” I reach for him, but Rosario grabs me.
“You’re on an exam table. You’ll fall off and hurt yourself if you move too quickly.”
“What the hell do you care?” I snap, my head whipping to her. Dizziness rocks me from the sudden movement. I close my eyes, sucking in deep breaths and exhaling until it passes.
“See. I warned you.” Her voice is soft, enraging me.
My eyes open, latching on to her painted face. Without the veil, I can clearly see the emotion in her eyes, sending me into a category five level of hurricane fury.
“What the fuck do you care? “You didnothingto help Chase or me. You watched as he was beaten and whipped while my clothing was cut off before I was carved and raped…” My voice quivers on the last word, a sour taste in my mouth.
I repeat the words inside my head.I was raped.
Raped. Violated.
I unwillingly lost my virginity to a fucking demon that I never would have consented to have sex with, even if he paid me.
Chase’s masculine groan comes from beside me. The sound is full of pain, echoing off the walls around me. I nearly sob from the relief coursing through my veins.
“Chase,” I whisper, my lips and chin quivering. I slap my hand over them, willing them to stop. I need to be strong for him.
His head slowly turns toward the sound of my voice. Long lashes flicker before they open. The whites of his eyes are bloodshot when they open, locking with mine.
A soft sigh comes from his lips before he croaks, “Hey, angel.”
Ignoring Rosario, I roll onto my hip, squeezing my eyes shut and wincing as the agony flows through me.Fuck, I’m in so much pain.The symbol they carved into my upper thigh throbs, and the pain between my legs from being violently raped has my breaths rasping from between my lips.
Chase frowns, lifting his head from the mattress. “Are you okay?”
I open my eyes, having no fucking idea how to answer, and marveling over the fact that, once again, his first concern is for me.
Searching for the right words to say, I finally say, “I am now.”
His smile is like the sun chasing the darkness away.
My breath hitches as I stare at it, the horrors surrounding us falling away as I get lost in the love simmering in his irises. I’m drawn to him like a moth to a flame.
Rosario clears her throat, breaking through our tranquil moment. “I’ve bandaged your wounds, but I really need to clean you both and reapply some ointment so they don’t get infected.”
When my head turns sharply to hers, she’s staring at my exposed leg before her gaze roams over Chase’s back.
My gaze travels over the unfamiliar white blankets that cover me, except for my left leg that is exposed. As I move into a sitting position, the covers lower and I spot the T-shirt Chase had been wearing earlier. Orpheus made him take it off and it was left in the room with the closet we hid in, so I’m confused that I’m wearing it.
“I thought you’d be more comfortable in it.” When my gaze meets hers, she gestures to the shirt I’m wearing.
Clearing her throat, her gaze moves to Chase. “I know the sweatpants are a little big that he’s wearing but it’s all I could find.”
I’m dumbfounded as I stare at her for several beats.Why is she being nice to us? Is this some type of weird plan to pretend to be nice before killing us.
Why didn’t we die yesterday?
My eyes narrow. “Why are you being nice? And why… How are we still alive?”
Rosario stares at me, not saying anything.
