Chase kisses me until my lips are swollen and my panties are soaked. We pull away, breathing heavily, our eyes saying far too much. Everything is changing rapidly between us tonight, and I don’t know what to think about it.

But that’s a problem I’ll deal with tomorrow.

The loud crack of a stick breaking causes our heads to turn in unison toward the direction of the sound.

What the hell was that noise? My heart hammers inside my chest, my lips and mouth dry.

“It’s probably a wild animal, Kenz.” Chase’s voice is calm and reassuring, although when I turn my head to his, I see the concern on his face. “That’s my cue to examine the damage.”

I nod, reality intruding upon our moment, viciously yanking me back to the present.

My thoughts course wildly inside my head as I peer into the dark forest, wondering for the first time how long we’ve been kissing, lost in one another. I had no idea it’s gotten so dark. “Be careful out there.”

Chase flashes me a reassuring smile. “I’ll be fine, Kenz.” His hands move to my hips. “I need to move you so I can get out of the vehicle.”

“Oh. Yes.” Coldness washes over me at the thought of moving away from him. I try to distract myself from it by focusing on something else. The accident careens through my head, intruding on my lustful thoughts and bringing me back to reality.

The darkness prevents me from seeing the damage that occurred, but considering how close the tree is, I know it’s extensive. Tears spring to my eyes.Fuck. We wrecked my brother’s car.

Chase’s fingers grip my chin, turning my face back to his. “It’ll be okay, Kenz.” He leans forward, resting his forehead against mine. “The important thing is that you’re okay. Vehicles can be fixed or replaced. But you’re irreplaceable, Kenz.”

It’s impossible for me to resist the raging sincerity in his eyes. The corners of his mouth tug into a genuine smile, chasing away the dark cloud that descended over me.

My voice is soft as I speak the words inside my heart. “So are you, Chase. There’s no one in this world who compares to you.”

His eyes soften, and like warm ocean water that beckons me into its depths, I drown in them. The feel of him beneath my hands, his warm breaths against my skin, provide me with a type of comfort and peace I’ve never known before.

“I should get out of the vehicle.” Chase doesn’t move.

I grin, nodding at him before my expression grows serious. “I should examine it with you.” I start to move, but he stops me.

“No, Kenz. Let me look. You can wait here.”

It hits me why he’s saying that. My heart quivers inside my chest. If we totaled my brother’s vehicle, I don’t think I can handle it.It’s the only piece of him that remains, other than his memory.

“Hey, are you okay?” His eyes search mine, roaming anxiously over my face.

“I’m okay. Thank you for hanging onto me so tightly.”

“You know that’s not what I meant.” He stares at me for a few moments, his eyes and smile soft. “I’ll always hold onto you tightly, angel. I couldn’t let go of you if I tried.”

MACKENZIE

Chase settles me in the passenger seat, giving me one long, searching look before closing the door. The chill of the night air seeps into the SUV, waking my brain from the lust-induced state it’s been stuck in to the rational, yet somewhat fearful girl I’ve become.

Although, I wasn’t fearful until the accident…No, don’t go there.

Blowing out a breath, I follow the flashlight beam from Chase’s phone until it moves in front of the vehicle, and I can no longer see anything except the darkness. My gaze darts around, chills erupting over my body.I can’t just sit here. I don’t care what Chase says.

Fumbling with the door handle before finally shoving it open, I slide from the seat, the heels of my boots sinking into the dampness of the forest. Weeds brush against the legs of my jeans. The chilly October night air seeps through my clothing, making me shiver. I glance around, an eerie feeling settling into my bones as I dig my phone from my back pocket and turn on the flashlight.

With dread in my heart, my shaky legs begin moving toward the front of the vehicle. I keep the flashlight lowered to the ground so I don’t trip, my heels making the trek to the front of the vehicle take longer than it should. Or maybe it’s the trepidation that wound itself so tightly around me I’m finding it hard to breathe.

“Kenz? What are you doing?” The concern in Chase’s voice makes me jump. I’m so lost inside my head that I didn’t hear him move closer to me.

“I have to?—”
