“Yeah, you’re right. I’m exaggerating. He’s just your friend,” I say, then add, “Now can I kill you?”

“No, of course not. Why?” Lorenzo asks, coming to his defense.

“Was it necessary to mention that I looked like your friend?”

He shrugs and I cross my arms, annoyed. “Kind of,” he tells me. “Wait, why are you here anyway? In a school?”

“It’s for the new event, genius.” He takes a second, pondering, before realization hits him.

“Oh.” He exaggerates the word coming out of his mouth. “That makes sense. You’re picking the winners from here?”

“Yes.”

“Take me.”

“Ha, you’re dreaming. I can’t take my best friend, it’s not fair to others.”

Lorenzo frowns. He’s the only connection I have that the world knows about, for many reasons. “New York is boring anyway,” he says as he rolls his eyes. Look who’s talking. He’s always wanted to go to New York.

“I’ll see if you can come, okay?” I tell him. His expression suddenly shifts.

“Thanks, fiore mio.”

I sigh, thinking we agreed to drop that name. “I told you to stop calling me that.”

“Never. I would rather die,” he says. I smile back. No matter who’s in this school with me, as long as Lorenzo is here, I know I’ll be fine. If he says Elias is a good person, then I trust him. I’d trust him no matter what. He’s my safe place. One of the little amounts of safe spaces I have. He always will be.

Chapter 5 – Ottanta

I knock on the back door, waiting for someone to open it. After a while, Ellie lets me in.

“Hello,” she says, giving me her attention, which is unusual. “How was school?” She definitely wants something from me. So, I don’t waste time and ask her.

“What is it? What do you want?”

Ellie frowns, drawing her eyebrows together as she crosses her arms. Is that how I look when I’m annoyed?

“Why do you always assume I want something?” she accuses, acting innocent.Because you always do, I think, but I play along with her.

“Doyou want something?” I ask, trying to prove my point.

She drops her hands, softening her expression. “Yes,” she admits, giving in. I laugh through my teeth. I knew it.

“So, what is it this time?” Ellie’s requests are either very easy or very hard, so I’m praying this one’s on the easy side.

“Okay. My friend Sarah is having a small partyat her house, and all my friends are invited. I would tell mom to go, but she’ll never leave if she sees Tammy there,” she explains.

“A gathering? I thought you didn’t like those.” She doesn’t normally, especially when there are boys, proving my point from earlier. I mean, I understand why she came to me. Ellie and Tammy had some conflict not long ago, and Mom would never trust her with Ellie alone.

“I don’t, but this one is girls only, and Elaina is finally going.” Elaina. Who the hell is that?

“Who’s Elaina again?” I ask, clueless.

“Really?” She judges. Rude. Am I not allowed to forget? I hear a thousand names a day, I can’t be expected to remember everyone. She should know that.

“I’m forgetful, deal with it,” I tell her. She sighs. Rude again.
