“Of course it matters. I could’ve fixed something. I could’ve got you separate rooms. I could’ve gotten something else organized. How could you come without telling me this?” I ask, my heart beating faster.

I see a spark of sorrow in his eyes before he answers, “Vi, I wanted to come with you,” he confesses. “If I had told you, you would’ve taken me off the trip, not him. He’s a winner, I’m a guest. I wanted to spend these last three weeks with you, Vi. If I had told you, I would’ve ruined this for you.”

The pressure in my chest starts to build. I feel guilt, and sadness, and sorrow, and shitty.

“Why? If you hate him, why don’t you hate me?” I ask him.

His expression hardens again, as if confused by my question. “Because he hurt you, Val. Ellie told me you were troubled about the kiss, but Ellie doesn’t know how serious that is. My question is why didn’t you tell me?” he answers, and I freeze. Ellie said that. Oh my God, Ellie, why would you say that?

“Ellie said that?” A cold shudder goes through my body as I ask.

“Yes. And I don’t care what his excuse is, but he shouldn’t have kissed you.”

“No, Lorenzo. No. He didn’t kiss me. We kissed.We.Ellie wasn’t—”

“Listening properly? Val, I don’t care that he’s my best friend, he doesn’t get to do stuff like that and get away with it. He doesn’t get to touch you,” He interrupts. No. No, this is all going wrong. “I guess he really was raised by Roland.” He ends the conversation, turning around and continuing toward the gate.No. No, no, no! My heart feels like it’s being hit, and my body is suddenly cold. I bring my hands to my face, covering it.

What am I going to do?

Chapter 63 – Ventidue

Elias

The plane took off four hours ago, and we have a bit over an hour left until we land. Ellie, sitting next to me on the outer seat, is silent. I don’t know whether that’s because she’s just like that, or because Violet told her to be. Probably both.

I look out the window, when I suddenly hear a voice, “Is your eye any better?” Aurora asks. My eye is fine. It’s nothing. It’s like it cancels out by the pain in my heart. The pain of emptiness. Who knew no pain was painful?

“It’s fine,” I answer, still looking outside.

“You’re upset,” she points out, and I know it’s obvious. By my expression, by my actions, by my words. Everything shows it.

“I’m fine, I already told you,” I repeat.

“He’s not fine. He got punched by Lorenzo after being ignored completely, he’s broken,” Ellie blurts out. She talks. Who would’ve thought it? And she’s summarizing my problems.

I turn around finally, to look at her. “I thought your sister told you not to say anything.”

She frowns at me before turning back to Aurora.

“What happened? Ellie?” Aurora asks her now, giving in on any hope that I’ll give her an answer.

However, Ellie disappoints Aurora when she answers, “I can’t say.” She sits up straight, acting mature.

Aurora shakes her head in confusion. “I don’t get it. You tell them everything by accident, but you’re good at keeping secrets when it comes to me?” she complains.

Ellie only shrugs her shoulders. Aurora rolls her eyes, turning to Violet. From here, I’m unable to hear what they’re saying. But they’re talking. At least they’re talking. She hasn’t said a single word to me, yet. Maybe in general, or while she’s talking to everyone else, but not directly to me. She’s avoiding me, and for some reason, that hurts.

Aurora then stands up and walks around toward Ellie. “We’re switching places for a couple of minutes,” she tells her, and Ellie jumps up and runs to the seat next to Elaina. Aurora then sits down next to me. She’s obviously here to ask me questions. Questions I can’t answer. I can’t tell her yet. I don’t even know what’s going on myself.

“What?” I ask her immediately.

“I should be asking you that question,” she replies, crossing her arms.

“It’s nothing, ignore it.”

“Nothing? Well then, nothing got your eye punched by your friend,” she mentions, reminding me.

He likes her. So, what, he did it out of jealousy. Are they dating? He told me there was nothing going on between them. I asked him, because I wanted to make sure that there would be no problems. Yet, here we are, with problems.
