She then pulls away to look at me, her eyes bloodshot.

“Are you okay? Did he hurt you at all?” She shakes her head, wiping her tears with her hand. She’s not going to go back home now. She won’t worry her mom, I know her. Not until she makes sure she’s calm and okay.

“Come on, you can stay at mine until you feel better,” I tell her. Her mom gets concerned easily, especially where Val is concerned. She won’t let it go easily if Val’s hurt or scared. Val nods slowly, grabs her things, and follows me to exit.

“I’ll make sure your car is safe until tomorrow,” Oliver tells her. I flash him a weak smile before we both go outside. We walk to the car silently, then get in. I look at her for a second. She doesn’t look okay. I move my hand and hold hers.

“Vi,” I say quietly so she turns to face me. “You’re okay. You know that, right?” I tell her.

“I know,” she says, almost whispering. She holds my hand tightly before letting go and wrapping her arm around her stomach. Her eyes are still slightly red.

I face the front and turn on the engine. She doesn’t say a word through the whole drive, and instead, stares out of the window. When we get to the house, I park in the car's usual spot. We both get out and walk up the stairs to the front door.

“I’ll stay outside. I need some fresh air,” she tells me as we get to the top step. I don’t stop her. She needs to do whatever she thinks will make her feel better.

“Of course. I’ll be out in a second,” I reply. Unlocking the door, I enter the house and walk to the kitchen. I get a glass, fill it up with water, and go back outside. Val sits on top step, staring at the sky. I sit next to her and give her the glass. “Here.”

She takes a sip and places it at her side. She twists her head to look at me. She’s not shaking anymore. She’s not as stressed, either. That’s good, it means she feels better.

“Thanks Lorenzo,” She utters with a soft smile. I smile back. I’d do anything for her.

“Don’t worry about it. As long as you’re okay.” I let her know. She slides closer and lays her head on my shoulder. Her body relaxes as she closes her eyes slowly. I run my hand across her arm, caressing it, turning my head slightly to see that she’s fallen asleep.

“Everything’s going to be okay. I promise, fiore mio,” I whisper to her before placing a small kiss on her head. A cold shudder hits me before I raise my head back to the night sky, the stars shining brightly over the dark blue. After some minutes, a small shooting star passes by. It only passes for seconds, but it lights the sky for those short seconds. One wish. Those who see it get to make a wish. I look down at Val, my lips twitching upward.

You’re okay. You’re safe. As long as I’m here, you always are. I won’t let anyone hurt you.

Chapter 9 – Settantasei

Val

I open my eyes, focusing on my surroundings, looking around and trying to figure out where I am. I’m in my room. How did I get here? I sit up on my bed and turn on the lamp on the bedside table. I then notice my mom sleeping on the single couch in my room. Why is she here? What time is it?

I find my phone and look at the time. It’s two in the morning. I turn back to the couch. “Mom?” I whisper, waking her up almost immediately. She sits up straight.

“Vi. You’re awake,” she says, and I don’t miss the relief in her tone.

“What happened? How did I get her?” I ask. Last thing I remember was being with Lorenzo.

“Lorenzo drove you here. You were awake, I guess physically but not mentally,” she says, getting up and sitting next to me. I don’t remember being driven anywhere. “So, want to tell me what happened? Most importantly why you went to Lorenzo andnot to me,” she asks me. That’s why she’s here. She won’t sleep until she knows what happened.

“I didn’t want to worry you,” I tell her.

“Well, now I’m worried that you’ll never tell me anything because I’ll get worried,” she states. I chuckle softly.

“I’m fine, don’t worry.” I assure her. She stares at me, demanding a reasonable answer. “It was just a fan attack, Ma. I didn’t get hurt, I only called Lorenzo because Oliver said it was preferred that I didn’t drive home alone,” I explain. Her face softens, a spark of sadness in her eyes.

“Why didn’t you call me, Vi?”

“I didn’t want you to worry mom. It’s fine, I wasn’t hit or anything, just startled,” I reassure her.

My mom looks at me sadly and runs her hand through my hair. “You make me feel like a bad mother.”

“Hey, don’t say that. We made a deal.”

A smile appears on her face. She moves closer and wraps her hand around me. “Don’t worry me like that again, okay?”

“I won’t,” I promise. She continues to hug me for a while before releasing her grip.
