Page 20 of Stuck Behind Her

“I’m going to sleep. I don’t know about you, but I’m exhausted,” she says, then stands up and walks to the door. “If you don’t want to go to school because you’re still shaken or tired, don’t.”

“Okay, I won’t.”

My mom leaves the room, closing the door behind her. She worries a lot, when it comes to me or Ellie. She tells me she wants to know everything that happens, but I guess sometimes I try to keep it away for her sake, because I know how much she’ll overthink it. She doesn’t want any of us hurt, and I get that. I just wish I could relieve the stress she feels when something does hurt one of us.

I lie back down in bed. Should I go to school today or not? It’s still the first week, so skipping a day wouldn’t be the best yet. I decide to go; it’s all only a month and a half anyway.

After waking up at two a.m., sleeping is impossible, so I decide to just get up. I get ready early and head out. The wind is calm while the sun shines weakly in the sky. I walk to the school, staring at its brick walls when I get closer and wonder how old this school is.

Considering I left home early, I get to school early as well. When I arrive, I go up the stairs and into one of the hallways. There, I spot both Elias and Lorenzo sitting on the floor, their backs to their lockers. They’re here early, too. I walk toward them.

“Good morning,” I greet, catching both their attention.

“Hey Violet,” Lorenzo answers. He’s made sure to tone down the nicknames while we’re at school.

“Good morning. You’re early.” Elias points out. I’m not usually early, but look who’s talking.

“I can say the same to you guys. How come you’re both here now?” I turn the question to them.

“I’m always here early. Lorenzo’s here with me,” Elias replies. Makes sense. “Now, what’s your reason?”

“I woke up early. That’s basically it,” I tell them. Lorenzo doesn’t look surprised. I still haven’t thanked him for yesterday. I should. I don’t know what I would’ve done without him.

“Well, I guess I should go to my locker,” I say, trying to gesture for Lorenzo to come with me. Luckily, he gets the point.

“I need to go get something, too. Let me come with you,” he adds, getting up.

“Take your time,” Elias tells him before we walk ahead. We take a turn to make sure we’re out of anyone’s sight. When we are, I stop and turn to him.

“I wanted to thank you. For yesterday,” I whisper. His mouth curls upward.

“Vi, you don’t need to thank me. I’m your best friend, it’s my job. I would do it a million times if I had to,” he whispers back. I know he’s telling the truth, he would come to my rescue infinite times if I asked him to. He’s told me that almost every time he does anything for me, so I know he means it.

“Now come on,” he continues, “let’s go get some random thing on the way to your locker so Elias doesn’t get suspicious.” He begins to walk forward and I run to catch up to him. He didn’t let me finish my thanks. Not that he ever does. He knows what I’ll say each time, and he doesn’t want me to say it. I know him, just as he knows me. I don’t know what I would do without him.

When break time comes, I go to find Aurora. This school is huge, so unless you know where the person actually is, it’s impossible to find them. Luckily, I know where Aurora is. I walk through the hall of the third floor and to where our lockers are. There, I see Aurora and Elias sitting down. This is one of the days he hangs out with us. I frown, looking up to the ceiling. Don’t be rude to him, Val. I look back at them, wondering where Lorenzo is.

I walk toward them and sit down on the floor next to Aurora. “Hey,” I greet vaguely.

“Hey Violet,” both Aurora and Elias say simultaneously.

“Where’s your missing friend?” I ask Elias.

“He had to leave early. I don’t know why,” he replies. Is he skipping? I wouldn’t be surprised.

I then turn to Aurora, who has one earphone in. “What are you listening to?” I ask her. She turns her head to me, taking the ear pod out of her ear.

“She only listens to one person,” Elias says. I wasn’t asking him, but okay. She elbows him before answering me.

“It’s one of Valentina’s songs. You do know who she is, right?” Oh yeah. She’s me. I forgot that she liked me. Well, the celebrity me.

“Yes, I know who she is,” I say, trying not to laugh. I’d be concerned if I didn’t know who I was.

“She’s addicted to her music. And her,” Elias mentions. Someone is addicted to me. I’ve never heard that before.

Despite the jokes, it’s actually very encouraging when I see someone saying they love my music. Finding ideas and inspiration is hard, but at least it’s worth it in the end.

Aurora rolls her eyes and stands up. “I’m going to grab a snack from the cafeteria. Wish me luck, and don’t disappear on me,” she demands, turning to Elias.
