Page 21 of Stuck Behind Her

“Do you want me to come with you?” I ask. Don’t leave me alone with Elias. I’d rather go through the café crowds.

“I’m fine. It’ll only take a minute, and the cafeteria isn’t the best place to be at break time. Anyway, I’ll be back,” she says before walking away. I have no doubt she’ll be gone for at least ten minutes, which means I’m stuck with Elias until then. This is going to be awkward.

“So, how do you find the school?” he asks. There it is again; he’s being kind. I really don’t get it anymore. Life is trying to get me to trust him easily, but I have experienced enough of it to know not to. It can’t convince me otherwise.

“Good. Like any other school. I’m surprised you’re here. I never thought your dad would let you come to such a school,”I say, turning slightly to him. Roland could be greedy his whole life, but he had to let that greed go, and let his son come here, didn’t he? I’d say it’s intentional, but he doesn’t even know I go here. He also wouldn’t let him come if he knew I was here. I’m sure he hates me, every one of me, but at least that’s something we’re mutual on.

“Aurora’s parents and he had a fight, my dad was in the wrong, and to avoid him getting exposed with any of the hundreds of things my aunt has against him, he agreed to do anything for her. She used that to convince him to let me come here. So, here I am,” Elias explains. Well, at least April and Lucas get it.

“And you. I was surprised you were Ellie’s sister. Elaina talks about Ellie a lot, but she never mentioned you,” he states.

“I don’t go out much. My mom mostly takes Ellie places. Though, I don’t know why she hasn’t mentioned me,” I lie. Of course, I know why she hasn’t mentioned me. It’s not her choice. It’s also why she visits her friends rather than they visit her. I won’t risk it.

He looks at me for a second, slightly squinting his eyes. Is he analyzing me or something?

“Is something wrong?” I ask him.

“No, you just look like someone I met a while ago,” he answers, smiling slightly. I know why he thinks that, it’s because I’m her. I still don’t remember meeting him. I’m just grateful Lorenzo calls me Violet as it would be too suspicious if Lorenzo had two friends named Valentina. At least, if for some reason Elias figures out I’m Lorenzo’s friend, he might not suspect I’m the celebrity, instead.

“Who?” I ask just for the fun of it. Aurora might take a year for all I know.

“Lorenzo’s friend. Her name’s also Violet. Violet Hart. She is from Portland, and I met her a couple of years ago. And you probably don’t care,” he notes.

“I don’t,” I admit with a grin, “but continue.”

He sneers, looking at the opposite wall. “Then ask me something you do care about,” he says, turning his head back to face me.

Nothing. Nothing to do with you.Okay, that’s rude. Elias didn’t do anything yet, what is wrong with me? This isn’t me. I said I was going to find people who were nice, but I’m not even being nice myself. Regardless of trust issues, I need to fix my attitude.

He might be Roland’s son, but for all I know, he could be nothing like him. I really need to give him a chance, without shooting him down every time he tries. Lorenzo is right; I associate Elias with the last name Miller too much. I’m hating the wrong person. I turn my body, bending my legs and facing Elias entirely.

“Tell me about Roland,” I ask him and he raises an eyebrow in response.

“What do you want to know about my dad?” he responds.

“Anything. Positive, if there is something,” I reply. His eyes squint as he smiles. I’m hilarious, I know.

“What, you don’t think there is anything good about him?”

“No. If I thought that, I wouldn’t be asking. Aurora told me he isn’t the best father, and personally, I’m waiting until you tell me otherwise,” I explain.

“He isn’t. I won’t lie to you,” he states.

“Nice to know. Guess it’s one of the other bad traits he has.”

“Do you hate him?” Elias asks me.

I tilt my head, smiling. “Yes. Isn’t that obvious?”

“It’s not obvious, but it also isn’t a surprise. Not many people like him.”

Many people like him, let's be real. If people didn’t, he wouldn’t be as successful as he is now. “Good that you know that. It’s very down to earth of you,” I compliment. He scrunches his brows, turning to me.

“Is that why you avoid me? You don’t like me. You think I’m like him because I’m his son?” He’s smart, Lorenzo was right.

“I respect someone who’s self-conscious. But I just don’t trust you yet. You could very much be like him,” I note, shifting back to face the front. I hear Elias chuckle softly, and catch him also turning back from the corner of my eye.

“I might just have to prove you wrong,” he says quietly.
