Page 23 of Stuck Behind Her

“Why are you here now anyway? I thought you valued sleep,” Elias points out. He has a point.

“I do. But I also value the little moments my dad is free. I woke up to talk to him.” She responds. I tilt my head to the side in confusion.

“He lives in Spain. Time difference,” she answers my unspoken question.

“Oh yeah, I forgot your dad works in Europe. Lorenzo told me,” I tell her, even though it isn’t the truth. Lucas’s accent makes it obvious. I honestly love Spanish, but English and Italian is enough for my brain.

“Anyway, we were actually talking about Roland,” I tell her.

“Good or bad?”

“I’d like to know what good there is to say about Roland,” I say, “No offense.” I turn to Elias, apologizing.

“I mean, he’s rich and successful, even though he’s greedy,” Aurora says, raising her shoulders. She takes off her backpack and places it on the floor.

“No, his wife is, he just gets the credit.” I cross my arms over my chest. Emily Miller, Roland’s wife, is the one who originally inherited the family business, but Roland ended up taking charge of part of it and now he takes all the credit. So, no, Roland isn’t actually the successful one.

“How do you know that?” Aurora asks, scrunching her eyebrows.

“Doesn’t everyone?”

“No. It’s surprising how fast people can be blinded,” Elias says from behind us. Of course. I roll my eyes.

“So, what were you saying about him?” Aurora asks again.

“Violet hates him, and we were talking about it,” Elias answers.

“He’s greedy, you need to get used to people not liking him,” Aurora tells him. Greedy. That’s probably one of his traits people should worry about least. Roland is arrogant, jealous, and just overall an asshole. He can do what he wants with his money, but he needs to stop acting superior to the rest of the world.

“He’s arrogant. Saying he should be hated for his greed is an understatement,” I tell her.

“You really hate him, don’t you?” Aurora smiles. I shrug, tugging on my bag.

“Come on, let’s go to our lockers,” I tell her, gesturing my head forward and ignoring her question. She chuckles, grabbing her bag and pulling the strap around her shoulder. She waves to Elias before following me to class. We walk through the halls until we get to our lockers, which are close to each other.

“So, you’ve been talking to Elias more often,” Aurora points out. She punches the code in the locker and opens door. I copy her.

“I guess you can say that.” I really am trying to give him a chance. It’s harder than people think, considering Roland was so proud of his parenting with him. It’s hard to believe he wasn’t raised with his traits. But I’m giving him this opportunity. If he can prove he’s trustworthy, I won’t associate him with negative traits.

“Trust me, he doesn’t suck. You’ll come to see that,” she says, reading through my thoughts. Both her and Lorenzo have told me that which only increases my expectations. I hope I don’t end up disappointed. I’m just wishing he doesn’t turn out to be a bad person, or greatly influenced by his dad. I’d be happy to know he really isn’t. But, until I do, he’s still on my warning list. He can decide when and how he gets out.

When lunch starts, Aurora and I go to our usual spot. I spend most of my time here with her and it’s nice to have someone’s company through all my boring and confusing lessons. It’s not surprising I find everything complicated; I was never a school genius. I also skipped two years of high school, which makes it even harder.

Luckily, my grades don’t matter. They’re not even entering my name for the exams; they’re entering a non-existent person. I think being able to do that is probably one of the things I’m most proud of.

Lorenzo is beside his locker when we arrive, sitting next to Elias. It surprises me that they are such good friends. Lorenzo didn’t talk much about his other friends, and I understand why he didn’t mention Elias much. He doesn’t come to LA a lot, and probably rarely sees him.

“Hey,” he calls out to us as we approach them.

“Hey Lorenzo,” Aurora and I say respectively. We drop and sit in front of them cross-legged.

“Hello to the both of you,” Lorenzo greets back.

“I thought you weren’t here today,” Aurora complains.

“Good for you,” Lorenzo replies in a mocking manner. Aurora rolls her eyes at him. I can’t help but smile. I don’t get why they argue so often.

“Anyway, Violet. You said you said you know who Valentina is . . .” Aurora turns to me to confirm. I hear Lorenzo let out a quiet laugh and I look at him, silencing his laughter.
