Page 24 of Stuck Behind Her

I turn back to Aurora and answer, “Yes, I do.”

“Well, Lorenzo is her friend. Or best friend. I don’t know,” she says.

“I know that, too,” I tell her. Lorenzo is the only person the fans know has a connection to me. I let it be because he’s already well-known in the media. Luckily for him, he doesn’t get annoyed by anyone. Most of the time, at least. Even if they do annoy him, he says that it’s okay for everyone to know who he is. It’s his problem now.

“It’s the best thing about him. Everything else sucks,” she continues. Lorenzo squints his eyes at her. I look at Elias, who just sits there quietly watching the conversation.

“You sure Val would be happy with you saying such things about me?” Lorenzo asks her. Aurora rolls her eyes at him. I almost answer him myself but restrain myself for the sake of secrecy.

“At this point, the only thing you’re missing is going to one of her concerts. Then you have the full obsession package,” Lorenzo tells her, gesturing an arc with his hand. She doesn’t take that lightly, giving him an ugly look. Lorenzo really likes teasing others for liking me, doesn’t he? It’s literally part of the career. Though I didn’t know Aurora was such a fan.

“What do you think I am, a millionaire? America isn’t a cheap place to live in. Especially Los Angeles,” she argues.

“Your cousin is. Last time I checked, he isn’t cheap.”

“I’m not making him pay for my ticket. Plus, his dad believes all the music industry is a scam and unbeneficial. My mom also doesn’t accept any kind of money from him. Always asks for something in return.” Lorenzo scoffs.

“Of course he does.” Lorenzo says, turning to Elias.

“I’m used to it, don’t worry,” Elias finally says. Now I feel sorry. His dad probably bores the life out of him. Ugh. No. I can feel sorry later on. When I know who I’m feeling sorry for.

“How about I get you tickets?” Lorenzo proposes. That’s unusual, Lorenzo offering someone tickets. Especially Aurora.

“You? Buy me tickets?” Aurora questions, reading my mind.

“No, genius. I won’t buy you them, I’ll get them for free. I’ll ask Val,” he answers, eyeing me. “But, on one condition. Elias goes with you. Just because I want to go against his father.”

Now he’s reading my mind. Lorenzo hates Roland almost as much as I do, but he has personal reasons for doing so, one of them being Roland’s hatred toward him.

Elias groans, frowning as he shakes his head. “Why are you like this, Lorenzo?” he sighs. Aurora ignores her cousin’s complaint, still looking at Lorenzo with distrust and disbelief.

“Two free tickets. And you sure that’ll be okay with her. I won’t cause a financial crisis, will I?” she worries. I almost laugh, again. She’s worried about two tickets.

“Aurora, she’s not going to go bankrupt because two people came to her concert for free. Over thousands of people go to her concerts. As long as you don’t go around telling everyone Val randomly gave you free tickets, she’ll be fine,” he tells her. He has to stop reading my mind.

A big smile forms on Aurora’s face as she turns to Elias. She puts on a desperate look as he sighs. “Please, Elias. Come on, Lorenzo is being kind, and he probably never will be again. You have to go!” she begs him. Elias lets out a long, surrendering sigh.

“Lorenzo, I’m going to get you back for this,” Elias promises, looking at him.

“Is that a yes?” Aurora exclaims. Elias nods, and she bursts in happiness. Lorenzo looks at me for approval, and I blink once and smile, answering him. Even though I don’t like the idea of anyone getting free things from me—since it’s unfair to others—I’ll let this one slide. They’re Lorenzo’s friends. Well, kind of. Plus, I like the annoying Roland factor of it.

I know I base a lot of my personality on annoying Roland, but that’s only because I see his son more often now. It’s a reminder. I’m not normally this consistent in trying to offendhim. He doesn’t deserve the attention. But now that I have more of an opportunity, I will take it when available. He deserves every part of it.

“Oh my God, Violet,” Aurora gasps, turning back to Lorenzo. “I forgot about you. Lorenzo, can’t you get a ticket for her, too?” Lorenzo tries his best not to laugh. He succeeds, unlike me, and I let out a short chuckle. “Don’t worry about it. I don’t need to go.” I smile.

“Are you sure?” she asks. I nod to her. I mean, I can’t go to watch my own concert, that’s physically impossible. I almost laugh out loud again but am able to stop myself. I glare at Lorenzo, who I know is thinking exactly as I am. Guess they’ll just have to go without me. Such a shame.

Chapter 11 – Settantaquattro

Elias

“So, what about fast food?” Lorenzo asks as we stroll the side of the street. Even with November’s arrival, it's starting to get chillier as the winds get stronger. It’s getting dark earlier too, with gray clouds covering the sky. Lorenzo and I decided to go for a walk after school, so here we are, picking a place to eat.

“Fast food?” I ask.

“Yes. What, too low class for you?” he comments.

“That’s not what I meant. If you want fast food, we can go,” I tell him. He’s the one visiting Los Angeles, meaning his choice should be taken into consideration.
