As long as he is, I know I’ll be okay.

Chapter 23 – Sessantadue

Elias

Everything goes back to normal. Violet and Lorenzo have seemed to solve the problem between them, and they’re both back to their bright selves again. Whatever they were going through, it was affecting both of them greatly. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Lorenzo that hurt, and even Violet looked unusually down.

When I first texted her, she found it weird that I was contacting her in that way. Why wouldn’t I? Has no one ever checked on her? Her reaction worries me, but right now she’s still not that fond of my presence. I don’t know if she ever will be.

Other than that, everything is usual, calm. We’re coming close to the end of November, which means it’s closer to the holidays. The great, old, holidays: one of the many things my father likes ruining. Another free day for me means more work he can introduce me to. I get that I’m taking over the company in the not-too-distant future, I really do. It’s just that working for him gets extremely tiring and boring after some time.

While on the subject of my father, I enter the house and see him standing at the entrance. I’ve just finished school. Can he not wait before lecturing me again? He’s wearing a black suit, and his hair, a tint darker that mine, is gelled and fixed. I let out a sigh.

“Elias,” He calls me in a sharp tone.

“No hello?” He obviously takes my response seriously, pressing his lips together in a thin line. “There’s no need to be serious, it’s a greeting.” I try to relieve his seriousness. His expression is rock solid. This is never good.

I walk to the side, my footsteps sending an echo through the entrance. The place is huge, and two staircases arch up, meeting at the top. The ground is made of marble, shining like glass. I drop my bag in the corner, then turn back to him.

“What’s wrong today?” I ask him. Is it another lecture? Did I do something wrong? Does he have another course he wants me to take a look at?

“Why don’tyouanswer that?” he asks back, crossing his arms. So, we’ve narrowed it down; I have done something wrong. But I haven’t done anything today. Not that I know of.

“I mean, I would, but I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I reply, walking closer to him.

“Of course you don’t. You really do like neglecting my rules,” he accuses, almost laughing. What? Neglecting his rules? I have never done anything against him.

“What rules? I don’t even go out. So, I don’t know what you’re blaming me for.” My volume increases, my brows furrowing.

“You really are an ignorant son, aren’t you?” he insults. What is wrong with him? What did I do?

“Oh my God, just tell me what I did that’s so offensive to you,” I demand, shaking my head.

“You’re keeping things behind my back, that’s what! You’ve been hanging out with random people. God knows who they are and what their intentions are,” he shouts.

My expression resets, and I look at his eyes, burning with flames. Seriously? Are we seriously going to argue about this?

“What? Is this about Violet?” I ask.

“Yes, of course it is! Who else would it be about?” he continues to shout, gesturing with his hands.

“You have got to be kidding me,” I say, bringing a hand to my forehead as I turn my body to the side. I can’t do this. Is he seriously angry because of this?

“No, I’m not. The deal was you go to school for Aurora, not to hang out with some random whore!” I jerk my head toward him, a spark lighting up inside me.

“What the hell, dad? What is wrong with you? She’s not some random person, she’s Lorenzo’s friend. You can’t call people that. And she’s at school, I just bump into her every now and then. I can’t ignore her for your sake!” I yell at him, anger taking over a part of me.

“Your texts say otherwise.” He narrows his eyes, while mine widen. My texts? What? A sudden rage fills my chest. I look at him, no regret or remorse visible on his face.

“You went through my texts?” I scold. What the hell? Why is he going through my messages, that’s none of his business. He shouldn’t be able to just invade my privacy like it’s nothing.

“Yes, and I’m thankful I did, since you’ve been lying to me.” Anger fills his words. I can’t believe he went through my things. Does Mom know? Did she just let him go through them like it didn’t mean anything?

“No, you don’t get to do that. You don’t get to blame me for something after you just violated my privacy,” I state, anger coursing through me.

He releases his hands, letting them dangle on his sides. “I get to do anything I want because you’remyson, and I do not want you hanging out with some lowlife girl named Violet,” he says itlike it’s an excuse. Like because I’m his son, I’m apparently his puppet.

“She is not a lowlife, don’t call her that. And I told you, she’s Lorenzo’s friend.”
