My heart painfully squeezed at his proposal. I did want to see him, to say my goodbyes for what I hoped wouldn’t be the last time.

And the baby…

He needed to know.

But it was the whole not knowing how he’d react thing that worried me. If the baby wasn’t his, would he still love me?

Would he still want to be with me?

Fuck.

This couldn’t have come at a worser time.

I’m leaving, Finn. It’s too dangerous for me to stay here. I’m taking a cab to my house to grab a few things and then I’m going to the train station.

His reply was almost instant.

Without discussing it with me first? I don’t fucking think so, Ginger. I’ll meet you at your place. We need to talk about this.

I let out a sigh, my chest tight.

Fine. I’ll see you there.

I love you.

I love you too, baby.

I went through my call logs, redialing the local taxi service I’d used to bring me to Xavier’s house. After giving the name of the hotel I was in, I was told to be ready and outside within ten minutes.

After grabbing my bag and the pistol Finn had loaned me from out the nightstand, I delicately tucked it away under my shirt and exited the hotel room. It took me barely two minutes to reach the front desk. I dropped off the key, then waited around in the parking lot for my ride.

A wave of comfort washed over me when the same driver who’d picked me up from the airport, Phil, or some shit like that, pulled up beside me and parked. We greeted each other briefly as he got out and helped put my bag in the trunk. Less than a minute later, we were on the road.

We turned into my neighborhood about fifteen minutes later, and I was honestly surprised to find the exterior hadn’t been harmed or vandalized. Coming here was risky, but my extra 9mm and spare boxes of ammo were locked up tight in my safe. I couldn’t leave those behind again. The more protection I had on me, the better.

“I’ll be a few minutes. Is that okay?” I asked Phil.

“No problem,” he said with a chipper smile. “Take your time.”

I thanked him and raced up the porch steps, heading straight for the large and half-dead aloe plant by the front door. When I had the key, I hurriedly unlocked the door and stepped inside. I flicked on the lights and then carefully—very carefully—withdrew my gun.

My living room and kitchen were connected, and from what I could see as I moved like a ghost, my weapon raised as I eyed around the two rooms, the coast was clear. With a jubilant sigh, I put the weapon away for now and then made a beeline down the hallway to my bedroom.

My safe was under the bed, so I dropped to my knees and threw the sheet up, grabbing and dragging the metal box out. I punched in my code and when the littleclickverified it was indeed unlocked, I opened it, then sighed again with relief.

Everything was here.

I went to pull my phone out my back pocket to call Finn, only to curse and bite down stressfully on my lip.

Shit.

I must’ve left it in the cab. With as long as it’s been, Finn should’ve been here by—

A loudcrashfrom outside had me on my feet in an instant, and I couldn’t help but expel a shriek when I rushed to my bedroom window and peeked out, my blue eyes frightfully wide.

It was the Bling Brothers. They’d T-boned the cab. My breath stuttered harder in my chest when one of them jumped out of the car and wasted no time shooting the cab driver in the head.

I jumped back before they could see me in the window and literally somersaulted back over to the safe, hurrying to check my rounds and reload them if necessary.
