Operation,“Murder Brian in His Sleep,” failed miserably. After I spent the whole weekend with Sky trying to help her cope through this bullshit, she let it slip to me last night that Brian dormed alone. When the timing was right, I waited until she fell asleep, then snuck out with all intentions of implanting a bullet in his dick. It just had to be my fucking luck to run into Rhett before the real fun could begin.

Words couldn’t describe how pissed I was when I awoke the next morning with a text from Rhett saying that Brian was gone. Notgone, gone. His clothes were missing, but everything as far as his personal property, backpack, and textbooks were still there, meaning Brian had used his weekend pass and took off like a pussy instead of staying to face his fuck-ups like a real man. Sky was still torn to pieces over everything and didn’t want to leave the dorm, and I wasn’t about to leave her by herself just in case the asshole had gotten any unwise ideas to show his face while I was gone. So, I skipped classes and spent all day on the couch binge watching more of the Vampire Diaries with my broken best friend.

“Wanna watch another episode?” Sky asked later that night as she rubbed her eyes, expelling a loud yawn. It was going on midnight. I wasn’t exactly tired, but I could easily tell it was all Sky could do to keep her eyes open.

“Nah, I’m good. You can head on to bed if you want. I’m not far from crashing.”

“Okay.” She lazily got to her feet. Wordlessly, I watched as she approached the door, double checked the locks, then inched up on her toes to stare through the peephole.

She sighed softly and shook her head, then turned to wander off to her bedroom. I frowned once I heard the door shut.

What a fucking mess.

Grabbing my phone, I stood tall and made way for my bedroom. When I reached my nightstand, I put my phone on the charger, barely able to fully get myself in bed or grab my TV remote before the damn thing started ringing.

“Who the hell is that?” I muttered to myself, my brows furrowing as I veered back and took in the wordRestrictedflashing on the screen.

I didn’t know who the hell it could be. A prank caller, wrong number, or those pestering automated voice messages asking if I wanted to extend a warranty for a car that I didn’t even have seemed like a reasonable bet, so, I didn’t answer it.

I placed my phone back on the nightstand then grabbed the remote. I’d been dying to see the new Jumanji movie since it was released, so when I saw Prime hadbothmovies, I knew it was going to be one long, exhausting, miserable day in school tomorrow.

About five minutes into the first movie, my phone started up again. When I glanced down, I saw it was the same restricted number.

I ignored it and focused back on the TV.

Two minutes later, my phone was ringingagain.

I paused the movie and grabbed my phone with an annoyed huff. As my eyes swept over the same word for the fourth time, I blinked in frank surprise.

Four times.

So maybe thiswasn’ta prank caller or a prerecorded message.

Despite myself, I nervously bit my lip and answered the call. “Uh, hello?”

“Hey there, beautiful,” a sweet, familiar voice greeted me, one that had me sitting up fast in bed, instantaneous tears springing to my wide eyes.“I knew you’d answer the phone eventually.”

“Ginger…”

“It’s good to hear your voice, Samara.”

“You’re alive.” My heart squeezed, and as hard as I tried to contain the waterworks, I couldn’t. Droplet after droplet dripped like a leaky faucet down my cheeks.

“You-you’re okay…”

“I’m better than okay, baby girl. I’mfree. I’m finally fucking free.”

I held in my sobs, soaking my hand as I tried desperately to knuckle the tears away. “Is-is it okay if I ask where you are?”

“I’m not allowed to tell you. All I can say is that me and the other girls are safe and out of the country. Only two people know our whereabouts, and that’s Xavier Michaelson and Finn. It has to stay that way. Nobody else can know, not even Jace.”

My heart dropped like a stone in my stomach. “What?Did you just say that Xavier Michaelson knows where you are? Why wouldhe, of all people, know that?”

“Oh no,” Ginger whispered under her breath. It was so soft she probably thought I didn’t hear her. “He didn’t tell you.”

“Ginger.” Rage began bubbling within me. “What the hell is going on?”

“Uhh,” her voice nervously rattled. “This isn’t how I expected this conversation to go. I-I thought either Finn or Jace would’ve filled you in by now.”
