Then his eyes flew open wide with horror when he looked up and saw me and Isaac standing in front of him wearing dark smirks.

“No…No!” He tussled around in his chair, tittering the legs back and forth as he struggled to break free. “No, goddamnit! Not again. Why the fuck does this shit keep happening to me?!”

“Welcome back, Jace,” I greeted him, getting right in his face with a demonic smile. “It’s time for the three of us to have a lovely little chat.”

Icursedlaterthatnight in my bedroom as I fumbled through my artillery, grinding my teeth. Rhett still had my spare gun, and since he hadn’t been around this week, I was never able to get it back from him. Other than my two handfuls of blades, I had one gun left, two extra clips, and more than enough ammo to fill and keep them visibly hidden.

“Guess it’ll have to do.”

The meeting started at ten. It was around nine-thirty now, so I had exactly thirty minutes to get myself strapped, armed, and dressed. If I remember correctly, the meeting would be at the clearing tonight. Once that was done, I was off to 12thStreet. Problem was, I had no idea how the fuck I was gonna get there. I wouldn’t make it there in time on foot, not even if I ran most of the way.

I had to get my hands on a vehicle.

About fifteen minutes later, I was ready. I finished throwing on my Three Days Grace hoodie and was walking out of my bedroom. Sky was on the couch, fully dressed in a white polka-dotted cocktail dress, sliding on a pair of matching sandals. Her makeup was done and applied to perfection. She sighed when she took in my pinched brows and sour look.

“I know,” she replied expectantly, frowning at me. “It’s a horrible idea, but I can’t stay cooped up in this dorm anymore. I just want to have a good night and not have to think or worry about Br—”

“It’s fine.”

I approached her, lifting up my jeans leg and pulling a blade from my ankle strap.

“Wh-what are you doing?” Sky asked shakily as I offered it to her, her eyes shrouded with fear.

“Take it,” I demanded. “I can’t stop you from going, but I’ll feel better knowing you’re there with some form of protection on you. If some random guy comes up to you and tries to force you into anything you don’t want, you slice his fucking dick off.Got it?”

Sky swallowed as she stared up at me. Her hand shook as she reached out and accepted the gift. “Yeah… I-I got it.”

“Call me if you need me. I mean it, Sky.”

I left it at that and exited the dorm, trailing for the elevator. When I made it down, I continued on with my long trek out the entrance and through the dark woods until I made it to the clearing.

Majority of the recruits were already here, including Kinsley Sinclair and her two bitches, Gretchen and Janice. The bonfire wasn’t lit, but there was a full moon tonight, allowing the stunning, mystical glow to illuminate a breathtaking array of light across the terrain.

Movement rustled through the trees behind and next to me, revealing the last of the recruits making their entrance, and Rhett himself, who was accompanied by a massive group of armed guards—at least ten or more.

Rhett moved front and center of the clearing. The comprehension that I was adamantly and uncontrollably checking him out hadn’t registered until Rhett locked eyes on me in the act of biting down hard on my lip.

Shit.

I shook my head, forcing myself to ignore the cute little smirk he’d offered me before his gaze narrowed in on the rest of the recruits.

Jace and I were together now, so I had no goddamn business to so much aslookat another guy that way. But, I had to admit that these feelings I’d been experiencing lately for Rhett and his brothers have been far beyond conflictive to my sanity. Aside from the obvious physical attraction and my disobedient punani thirsting for a taste anytime they were near, I loved Jace, and I wanted us to make it work however we could. Sleeping with Isaac might’ve been strictly business, but it was also a foolish mistake. I couldn’t fuck shit up any worse than I already have.

I couldn’t let this… connection… or whatever this shit was, sink its teeth in too deep.

“…preparations in order for your first trial…”

Damnit.

Focus, Samara.

“I’m sorry, what did you say just now?” I asked aloud, stupidly raising my hand. “I didn’t quite hear you.”

“I said,” Rhett started again, giving me a polite onceover, “that Phantom and Isaac are currently getting preparations in order for your first trial.” I watched as he began to slowly walk at a strong, authoritative pace, his stern eyes sweeping over the even number of fearful and ill-mannered glares shared amongst the recruits. “The time and location will be given to you on the day of through a brief text. I advise everyone wear something light, something you won’t mind getting…wet.”
