I squeezed Sky’s hand, offering her an apologetic smile before I bolted out the doors, slipping inside the women’s bathroom just across the hall.

“Hello?” I said once I was inside.

“Hello, Samara,” a strange voice greeted me, and I bristled, my jaw instantly tightening.

“Who thefuckis this?”

It definitely wasn’t Jace, that much I knew. This voice sounded machinelike, distorted, reminding me of theGhostfacevoice from theScreammovies.

I checked all the stalls, double checking for eavesdroppers. There were none. The dark voice chuckled through the phone as I faced the door.

“If you want him to live, come to the abandoned warehouse on 12thStreet. Midnight. Come alone.”

“Where the FUCK is—GODAMNIT!”

The call ended, making me growl deep in my chest and pace around the bathroom as I tried redialing Jace’s number. It was immediately sent to voicemail.

I tried again, and again, each time with the same result. When I called Finn just to have the same fucking turnout, I screamed at the top of my goddamn lungs and struck the bathroom mirror with my fist, shattering it into a thousand diamond pieces.

Phantom

Iendedthecalland shut off the portable voice scrambler, turning to face Isaac who was standing next to an unconscious Jace tied down to a chair.

“Think she’ll take the bait?” he asked.

I squeezed the phone then glared back down at the one and only message he sent her just last night, my jaw ticking with disdain as my eyes swept over the last three words again. And a-fucking-gain.

I love you.

“I know she will.”

Ignoring Samara’s incoming call, I shut the phone off, deposited it with the voice converter in my back pocket, then reached out to grab the joint Isaac had just lit and offered to me, bringing it to my lips. I cocked my head a smidge to the side as I scrutinized Jace, my blood on the brink of boiling.

Last night, after Rhett fell asleep and we knew he was out for the night, Isaac and I snuck out and took a little stroll downtown. Taking the backroads would’ve been suicide, seeing as how Damien probably had a hefty chunk of Outlaws posted along those streets, so we decided it’d be easier and less of a hassle to take the longer route down the main highway. We’d been in Outlaw territory enough over the years for each of those shit stains to have our cars and plates memorized. I owe the innocent prick whose car we hot-wired and hijacked in the school parking lot a hugethank you.We never would’ve pulled this off if the stupid fuck had any sense to lock their shit up.

I was able to track Jace’s phone directly to his apartment complex. When we got there, we identified his room number thanks to the little speaker-box by the door. All it took was a simple press of a button to the front office and pretending to have a pizza delivery to get us in. The rest is, well… history.

“How long until that drug wears off?” I asked, passing the weed back to my brother. “He should’ve come to by now.”

He shrugged. “Don’t know. It’s not like I measured that shit out before I injected him with it.”

I cocked my head at Isaac, shooting him an outrageous look. “Are you fucking kidding me? Cindy said that shit was potent enough to sedate a hippo!”

Isaac scoffed and threw up his hands as I dashed over with no other choice than to check Jace’s pulse, leveling me with his own incredulous glare. “Well fuck, Phantom. That would’ve been nice to know ahead of time, don’t ’cha think?”

“It’s common fucking sense, you goddamn moron! He’s been out for over twelve hours now!”

I pressed in harder on Jace’s neck, sighing with outrageous relief a moment later. Thank fuck, he was still alive.

“Well, since he isn’t dead, then he should be waking up soon. Fucker’s probably gonna have one nasty headache when he does.”

Isaac clapped Jace a few times on his cheek, then moved on to the other, the last tap ending in a brutalslapthat had Jace’s body lunging forward, a vicious scream tearing from his throat.

“Would ya look at that,” Isaac taunted, a wicked smile on his face. “He’s awake.”

I backed away as Jace let out a hiss and squeezed his eyes shut thanks to the blinding light spilling down from the warehouse’s blown roof. He groaned loudly, cursing to himself.
