And with it being radio silent on Jace’s end for weeks now, I doubted he’d respond if I reached out to him.

Later. I’d worry about it later. Wait and find out whatever info Isaac could gather from Ginger first before I make any brash decisions. There were other things on my mind I wanted to tend to.

Starting with this investigation.

I WAS JERKED AWAKE the next morning from my body tittering to the side in my computer chair, a strangled curse fleeing me as I fell to the floor and brought the whole damn chair toppling down with me.

Fucking shit. That really rang my wake the fuck up bell.

As I rushed to my feet, groaning a little from the kink in my neck, I tapped a key on the computer to bring up the screensaver.

Andfuck,it was nearing noon.

I scoffed in anger, not believing that Rhett and Isaac hadn’t bothered waking me up. Then as I thought about it, I didn’t recall remembering Isaac’s return to the dorm or when I’d fallen asleep. The last thing I did remember was…

Oh, shit.

I lifted my computer chair back on its legs and plopped back down, rushing to type in my password. All the information I’d gathered on Samara’s father was still there. As fast as possible, I went through all the tabs and sent all the articles I’d found to my printer. While the device was busy spitting out the pages, I stripped out of my shirt and shorts and stalked over to my closet. I yanked the academy’s required uniform off the hangers and dressed quickly.

I’d missed the first half of classes, but the good news was that my lunch period had just started, so I knew exactly where to find my brothers. After sliding on my shoes, grabbing the pages out the tray and safely tucking them away in an envelope, I was off.

I made it to the dining hall about five minutes later to find Isaac and Rhett huddled together in deep conversation. Whatever they were talking about must not have been good because Rhett looked like he was seconds away from spewing his lunch all over the table.

“Why didn’t you assholes wake me up?” I asked as I sat in front of them, a tight knot between my brows.

“We tried,” was Isaac’s curt response. “You were out cold when I got back last night.”

“You hadn’t slept in almost two days,” Rhett said softly, offering me a sad look. “You needed the rest.”

I noticed the slight bob in Rhett’s throat as he continued to stare at me.

“The hell is wrong with you?”

Rhett opened his mouth, his words abruptly cut off by Isaac claiming Rhett was still butt hurt over Samara wanting to leave the Valley.

Rhett sighed deeply, neither confirming or denying it. Instead of speaking my own thoughts on the matter, I peered around and asked, “Where is she anyway?”

“She’s sitting at one of the picnic tables in the courtyard. Rhett said it looked like she was working on those assignments she missed.”

“Is that what you found on her dad?” Rhett asked, observing the tan envelope I was holding.

“It is,” I said, swallowing hard. “I won’t lie to you guys. I’m worried what I found will cause more harm than good.”

“Is it that bad?”

“It’s…” I started, trying to think of the right words, “a lot to process.”

Isaac scoffed and then reached out and viciously snatched the envelope out of my hands. I had all intentions of discussing what I’d found, but if he would rather see it for himself, then fine. I had no objections.

“There’s no fucking way,” he murmured, his green eyes widening when he looked up at me. Rhett retrieved the pages from his hands and began skimming through them.

It was silent for a long moment as he continued to flip through the pages while Isaac silently read over his shoulder.

“And you’re positive this is accurate?” Rhett asked, his eyes sliding up to focus on me.

“There’s a copy of her original birth certificate in there that confirms it.”

“This changes everything,” he said again, his face stunned with disbelief as he passed everything back over to me. “Were you able to track him down? Do you know if he’s still alive?” They both gaped critically at me as they awaited my answer.
