“Well…” I chewed on my bottom lip, not exactly sure where to start. I didn’t want to lie to him about my little entanglements with the Ravagers. It had hurt him when he learned about Isaac. But he said it was OK. That he didn’t care if the others touched me. I was angry with myself because I knew better than to take advantage of that, and I did it anyway. “Do you remember when you said—”

“Which one was it now?” he asked, like he automatically knew what I’d done. “Rhett? Phantom?”

“Kind of all of them, I guess.”

He blinked wide-eyed at me, his jaw ticking.

“You’re mad…”

“No, baby, I’m not mad at all. I’m jealous those lucky fucks got to revel in your flame while I was locked up tight like an illegal foreigner.”

“Wait, what?” I sat up straighter in bed and locked eyes with him through the screen. “You got locked up? When? Fucking how?”

Jace swung his free arm around and rested it behind his head, his abs flexing as he breathed in and out. “It’s a long story, but yeah, I kind of attacked my father. In return he locked me up in my grandparents’ old wine cellar for eight days. Finn snuck me some food to hold me over. It was a goddamn nightmare, Kitten, but I made it. I’m home now, as you can see.”

I scoffed at his ludicrous explanation.

“You have every right to be upset with me. In my defense though, he turned my grandparents’ home into a cat house, and I’m not talking about the cute, innocent, furry creatures either.”

“Damien didwhat?” I asked through a gasp, my lips parted in disbelief. That sick bastard.

Jace breathed in deep then blew out, his eyes flashing. “Oh, Kitten, that doesn’t even scratch the surface on how fucked things have been.”

“Wh-what’s going on?” I asked. “Tell me.”

“Ginger’s back, for starters.”

“Excuse me?”

He nodded. “I didn’t know until last night, but yeah, she’s back. According to Finn, she just showed up out of the blue. She got here the same night I got thrown in the cellar.”

“So, Ginger’s been in the Valley for over a week, and I’m just now hearing about it? What the fuck, Jace?”

“How do you thinkIfeel?” he countered back at me, a look of genuine innocence plastered on his face. “We’re both rocking in the same boat here, babe.”

I couldn’t believe it.

No… This didn’t make any sense.

Why would she come back, knowing how dangerous it is? Why didn’t she call me? Fuck, why didn’t Finn?

I might not have known the full extent of the situation, but Ginger was my best friend. Perhaps it was a security issue on Ginger’s behalf, which did make sense the more I considered it. If that were true, then I couldn’t really hold that against her, now, could I?

But Finn…

That motherfuckercould’ve found a way to take five little minutes—two at the least—to pick up the phone and call me. Hell, I would’ve been fine and peachy with a text or some form of heads up. The fact he didn’t put in the effort to try really pissed me the fuck off.

“Where is she? Have you talked to her?”

Jace sadly shook his head. “No, I haven’t. I wish I could tell you where she is, but I don’t know that either. Finn wouldn’t tell me. He said it would be safer if we didn’t know.”

“That’s bullshit,” I lashed out, my eyes burning. “She’s our friend, Jace. I-I want to talk to her. See her. We have every right to know where she is!”

“I agree with you, baby, but I also understand where Finn’s coming from, too. It’s no different now than it was before. Ginger’s still in danger no matter where she is.”

“Last time I talked to Finn was about two weeks ago. He told me Damien’s trail on Ginger was still cold. Have things changed?”

He fell silent then. My heart jumped wildly in my chest the longer it took him to respond.
