Page 10 of Insidious Truths

“What the fuck do you want me to say?” he growled, his dark eyes glaring daggers between us when he opened them. “It’s a free fucking country, and last I checked, I don’t do nor am I considered to be in a relationship withanybody.I fuck who I want, when I fucking want, and that’s all there is to it.”

I shook my head, pissed off because I seriously couldn’t believe he was still choosing to play this ludicrous fucking game of denial despite his true feelings for Samara, feelings he purposely refused to speak of because of his shitty, abusive past. His foster parents really fucked him up; said and did things to him that had him not only psychologically brainwashed, but addicted to the abuse. Isaac’s perception of love, real, genuine love, had been twisted, manipulated, and tarnished since he was a child.

But it was that day at the pool, when I saw the look on his face when he thought Samara was dead, when I first-hand witnessed the truth with my own eyes. Isaac loved her. I wholeheartedly believed that all of us, Phantom included—especially after I found her slashed bra and t-shirt in the back of my SUV—loved Samara Campbell.

“How about getting your dick out of your throat and just admit you’re in love with her too?”

Isaac laughed like I’d just told the most comedic joke he’d ever heard. “Me? In love? You see, for me to be in love would mean that I fucked around and caught these things called ‘feelings.’” He cocked his head to the side in a smart-assed manner andthought silently to himself for a moment before he nodded and offered us a careless shrug.

“Nope. No feelings caught here.”

“You’re such a fucking liar,” I sneered. I wanted to throw my muffin at him, but I opted to bite into it instead to help ease my stress. It was blueberry and it was my favorite. I wasnotabout to waste it on his stupid face, furious or not.

“IfI caught feelings,” Isaac said with a humorous sparkle in his eye, like he was simply just entertaining the idea, “and that’s a bigIF,it can’t and wouldn’t work. You heard what she said. As soon as all of this trial and error bullshit is over, she’s gone. And given how much time has passed and how she’s been ignoring us since Ginger disappeared, there’s a strong possibility she opened that envelope and knows her whole life has been one huge fucking lie. I'd give it another twenty-four, maybe forty-eight hours. She’ll be long gone by then.”

“Not if we stop her.”

Isaac and I both snapped our gazes over to Phantom, whose insanely tight gaze was fixed over my shoulder, on Samara.

“I’m not saying Isaac’s right, but if she did open the envelope, then we need to keep tight eyes on her just in case she does try to leave. Now that we know who she is, we have to take into account how important she is. Samara is the rightful heir to the Ravager throne and I have strong suspicions Damien targeted her because of it.”

“Wait, what?” Isaac spouted. “You suspect Damien knew—”

“Yes,” Phantom rapidly replied. “I think Damien knows exactly who she is. And I think it’s the exact reason why he formed a partnership with Crane, Alesi, and Sinclair, and why he sent Samara here to kill us. Damien wants the Valley to himself. With us and Father out of the picture, all he'd have to do is kill Samara and the other lords and then BAM, he’s got the whole fate of the Valley resting in his hands.”

“But Samara said Damien called off the hit on us,” I reminded him. “He wants her to be a spy instead.”

“I’ve been thinking about that, too.”

Isaac got pissed and spurted that he wasn't getting into this shit again and got up, leaving me and Phantom alone at the table. Phantom ignored him and leaned in closer to me.

“I’m not certain, but IthinkDamien’s waiting to make his big move when Samara completes her final trial.”

“Wh-what do you mean?”

“Think about it, Rhett. He canceled the hit and ordered her to give him updates on the trials. He basically told her that her final trial for the Outlaws is to become a Ravager. He expects her to turn against us in the end.”

I was a little confused at first, but my lips parted once the pieces started coming together.

“You get it now?”

“And you’re certain?” I asked.

“Nothing is certain. It’s only a theory, and it’s the best one I have for now. Aside from that, I meant what I said about Samara. She needs to be protected, Rhett. She’ll be meeting the rest of the crew soon, as will the other recruits. Father hasn’t relayed her role in any of this shit to them and it’ll be chaos if they find out. We have to keep this shit quiet, especially Samara’s involvement with Damien.”

Fuck. That was honestly something I hadn’t considered nor did I ever think twice about asking Father about. Phantom was right. If our street crew learned the truth about Samaraandher involvement with Damien, all of Hell's gates would break loose, again. Who she is and what she means to the Ravagers wouldn’t matter.

This was a huge fucking problem.

“Okay… I’m with you. What are we gonna do about Isaac, though?”

“Isaac will be fine,” Phantom continued in spite of the uncertainty clung to his face. “He may seem like he’s lost, but he’s not. Like me, he’s having a hard time coping with all these goddamn feelings. No offense, but sometimes you seem to forget that he and I are a lot alike when it comes to dealing with our emotions.”

I couldn’t argue with him there, so, I didn’t. I just sat there munching on my food until I sighed, unable to help myself, and glanced over my shoulder to look at Samara.

“We can’t push it, Rhett. She’ll come to us whenever she’s ready.”

“Yeah,” I muttered, desperately wanting to believe him.
