And just like that he was gone before I could fully blink.

“Rhett,” I said as calmly as I could manage, my jaw tight. “What thefuckis going on?”

Rhett didn’t explain. He just sprinted out the door, giving me no further choice than to ragingly follow behind with my hands wrapping tighter around my weapons.

Screams continued to rip through the air as gunfire proceeded ahead of us, followed by two more explosions that had the roof shaking and pieces of rubble unevenly plummeting down behind us, urging us to run faster.

What the fuck was going on!?

I stayed close as Rhett pushed through the frantic customers who were still desperately searching for a safe exit. When wemade it to the main floor, that’s when we found him, Xavier Michaelson. He had two semi-machine guns in both hands and was tearing anyone and everyone down with a vicious battle cry tumbling from his mouth.

Rhett moved fast and dropped two more Outlaws he caught trying to sneak up on him from behind. My heart dropped like a stone in my stomach when Jasper, Bunny, and Brady were gunned down alongside the group of Outlaws Xavier was firing at. When the clips were empty, he threw the guns down and then opened his coat, grabbing a grenade. I couldn’t do nothing but watch it utter fucking terror, when he tossed it onto center stage with a malevolent grin on his face.

“GET DOWN!”

Rhett tackled me, and we both hit the floor when the grenade went off, blowing the stage to smithereens. Tears filled my eyes when I lifted myself up and caught a small glimpse of VIP. It was doused with nothing but smoke, and flames steadily licked up the walls, spreading fast. And as I glanced over at the main bar, it too was clouded with smoke and flames.

“I have to get you out of here,” Rhett said when he got up, pulling me along with him. “Let’s go. Just keep moving forward and whatever you do, don’t fucking look back, Jace.”

I held onto my guns tighter, forcing myself to ignore all the bodies as we went. Some were friends, and some were complete and utter strangers.Worstof all, the majority of them were innocent civilians.

“This is a fucking massacre,”I snapped at Rhett the closer we approached the nearest exit. The building shook even harder, pushing us to move faster.

“I’m sorry, Jace. This wasn’t my call.”

He kicked open the door leading into an alley where there was an SUV waiting for us. Rhett wasted no time opening the passenger door and urging me in. He quickly got settled behindthe wheel and did nothing but stare at the back door. His wet eyes were wide and shrouded with fear.

“Come on,” he murmured, his voice cracking. “Don’t make me leave you.”

“Rhett,” I started.

“Just shut up, Jace. SHUT THE FUCK UP!” He gripped the side of his head, tears rolling down his face. “I-I need a minute to think.”

I turned my head at the exact moment the back door flew open. Three Outlaws came storming out bullets blazing.

“Go, Rhett! Fucking GO!”

His face crumpled as he stomped the gas, bellowing out a sob as his fists pounded against the steering wheel.

“FUCK!” He cried harder, struggling to keep it together. “He’s dead.” His voice shook with his body. “He’s dead.”

“Rhett, I—”

“Shut up,” he furiously snapped, his jaw quivering. “He did this foryou.ForSamara.So you two could be happy together. He fucking sacrificed himself—” He froze, glancing up and doing a double take when his wet eyes landed on the rearview mirror. “You’ve got to be kidding me!”

He floored the gas, growling deeply as his dark gaze volleyed between the mirror and the road. I turned back, immediately spotting a SUV storming in hot on our asses.Shit.We were being followed.

A vicious sneer spread across Rhett’s mouth. As he one-handedly grabbed the gearshift, he looked me dead in the eyes and said, “I’d hold on if I were you.”

I did as he complied, fastening my hands around theOh Shithandles as Rhett spun the wheel and did some fuckery with the brakes that had slung us in a wicked drift, gaining us a three, maybe four second advantage.

“Get ready,” he said again, one hand tightening around the wheel while the other tapped the button to roll down my window. I watched, completely flabbergasted when Rhett took his eyes off the road long enough to grab a grenade from his coat pocket. “On the next turn, blow their asses up.”

He dropped the mini bomb in my palm and with a nervous nod, I unbuckled my seatbelt and leaned closer to the window, adjusting myself so I could stick my head and arms out. When the time was right, I pulled the pin and launched it. The bomb ignited and blasted the enemy’s front end high in the air until it crashed down hard against the roof and burst into flames.

We cleared a few more streets and when the coast was fully clear, Rhett pulled off the side of the road and parked. I didn’t know what to say, what to do, or much less how to feel because I was still trying to process everything.

All I could do was watch numbly as Rhett’s forehead fell against the steering wheel as he broke down sobbing.
