It was a quarter after two in the morning when we made it to the academy. Rhett hadn’t spoken a word to me the rest of the drive. He just kept repeatedly calling Xavier’s phone just to sob even harder every time it went to voicemail. The only time he did address me was when he’d told me to get the fuck out of his car and to stay close to him.

He led me across campus up to his dorm room, where Phantom and Isaac had been impatiently waiting for us. According to Phantom, in the time it’d taken us to get there, the incident at the club had already made the news.

“Is everyone good?” Isaac asked, his brows crumpling as he took in my nervousness and Rhett’s swollen eyes and puffy cheeks.

“Dad’s gone,” Rhett whispered, his cracked voice making my heart sink. “He’s gone.”

He said nothing more and just walked away, heading down the hall on my left until a door slammed hard enough to rattle the walls.

“What the fuck did he just say?” Isaac asked with wide, vexed eyes.

Phantom and Isaac turned then, their dark gazes padlocked on me.

“What thefuckhappened in there?” growled Phantom, his curled fists shaking.

Oh, fuck.

I took a few steps back to distance myself from them, avidly aware of the danger I was in—or would soon be in based off the look on both of their faces.

“It-it all happened so fast,” I said, swallowing hard. “I’m still struggling to understand it myself.”

“WHERE IS HE?” Phantom demanded in a viperous roar.

I desperately raised my hands when Isaac rushed to hold Phantom back, my eyes pleading for them not to hurt me. Isaac, I could handle, but Phantom was triple my size and was a goddamn force to be reckoned with when he was good and pissed the fuck off.

“I-I don’t know. I fucking swear I don’t.”

I explained my side of the story as fast as possible before Phantom got any bright ideas to break my neck.

“Bullshit,” he scoffed, angrily shaking his head. “You’re a fucking liar. Rhett wouldn’t just leave him like that.”

“He-he’s telling the truth, guys.”

Rhett stepped back into the room then. He was distraught, completely in shambles as he wiped under his massively swollen eyes.

His voice shook as he began speaking.

“Father told me to complete the mission. That once I had Jace, my orders were to get the fuck out and to leave him behind if I had to. As soon as I got Jace in the car, three Outlaws came storming out after us. I didn’twantto leave him, guys.I didn’t. But-but I had to. I didn’t have a choice. They’d have gunned us down if I didn’t.”

Phantom cursed and gripped his head, breaking as he stormed off down the opposite hall and ferociously slammed a door behind him.

Isaac walked over to the couch and sat down. Little by little his face began to shatter, his chest heaving harder with every breath he inhaled.

“Go see Samara.” Rhett sniffled as he fetched his keys from his belt loop, carefully searching through each one until he twisted one off and handed it over. “This is the key to her dorm. You remember where the water fountain is?”

I nodded, my throat bobbing. “I’m so sorry—”

“Ahead of the fountain is the front entrance,” his voice shook. “Go through the doors and at the right you’ll find a hall with elevators at the end.”

He gave me the floor and room number and had even pulled out his phone and texted the info to my burner.

“Again, Samara’s room is S7. She has a roommate, so make sure you’re quiet walking in. Samara’s bedroom is down the hall on the right side, at the end.”

“Rhett—”

“Just go, Jace. We’ll figure it out later. My brothers and I need to be alone right now.” He turned to head back to his room, pausing fast and whipping back around. “And don’t tell her what happened. We'll break the news to her later. Together.”

“And if she demands otherwise?” I asked, my brows raised high. “Surely you don’t expect me to lie to her.”
