“You'll do whatever the fuck I tell you to,” Rhett growled, his wet eyes flashing with unhinged fury. “The only reason you’re still breathing is because of me. Because my father wanted to do right by Samara and save you from being slaughtered like a fucking pig!”

I nodded to that, my lips pursed, and wordlessly turned to make my leave. Isaac cursed from the couch and called out to me, but it was already too late. I shut the door and didn’t look back.

I didn’t ask for this. For their help. Had Rhett, or any of them, had thought about texting and giving me a heads up before shit went down, then things could’ve gone a lot differently. I understood they were hurting, and that sometimes grief made people say and do awful things, but none of this was my fault. They had to have known that.

It still didn’t make me feel any better as I slowly trekked across campus, the cold air biting at my skin and making me shiver a little.

“Jace,” a familiar voice shouted. “Stop, man! Come back!”

I stopped walking and slowly spun on my heel. Isaac came jogging up to me, stopping and offering me a guilty frown.

“Why? So Phantom can strangle me to death?”

“He won’t hurt you,” he promised, sniffling as he wiped under his puffy, wet eyes. “Be honest with me,please. Is our father really dead? I mean, is there any possibility he made it out?”

I gave him the most honest shrug I could offer. “I really don’t know, Isaac. I don’t. Again, everything… it all happened so fucking fast, man. I still don’t fully understand what the hell is going on or why they—”

“We all knew about the hit Damien put on you. We just didn’t know when or where it was going down. Father feared you weren’t going to make it and didn’t want to put Samara through that pain. He’d talked to us about it earlier this morning when we went to see Griffin. He’s awake, by the way. He woke up this morning.”

My lips parted, my heart swelling with jubilation.

Finn…

He made it.

“Phantom didn’t agree with any of it, and to be frank, neither did I at first. Rhett though, he thought saving you was worth the risk. He didn’t want to see Samara hurt either. We all didn’t. She loves the fuck out of you whether you know it or not.”

Despite the circumstances, I smiled. “And I love her too. There isn’t anything I wouldn’t do for her.”

It fell silent for a moment.

“So what happens now?” I had to ask.

“Father gave us a pretty hefty list of orders to complete just in case he…” He froze, swallowing hard. His throat bobbed as tears began snaking down his cheeks. “Let’s just say we have a lot of work to do with not a lot of time to do it. Most importantly though, Samara comes first. If Father really is gone, then that means—”

“It’s Samara’s turn to reign,” I gasped out, my guts twisting.

Isaac nodded, hardening his face as he sniffled again. “Yes.”

“He’ll come for her, Isaac. My father.”

Fuck.

They seriously have no idea what they’ve done.

Or I don’t know… Maybe they did?

FUCK!

I needed answers and I needed themnow.

“He will,” Isaac agreed. “Eventually. I don’t know about you, but it’s fucking freezing out here and we need to get back. That’spartly why I ran out here after you. I know what Rhett told you but going to see Samara this late at night isnota smart move. She sleeps with her blades under her pillows and she isn’t afraid to use them either. She’d be heartbroken if she hurt you, so consider my warning as an act of good faith. It’s the least I can do especially since I did help kidnap you that one time.”

“And you fucked my girl,” I hotly reminded him.

“Still am,” he fired back with a weak grin.

I scowled. I figured as much, but it still didn’t feel all that great to know that he and his brothers had weaseled their way inside Kitten’s heart in my absence.
