Page 60 of Insidious Truths

I was having a little girl.

“Oh, Finn,” I cried softly to myself, placing a hand on my stomach, rubbing in smooth, gentle circles. “Fuck, this can’t be happening right now.”

This was supposed to be good news. I should be joyous, thrilled I wasn’t carrying my rapist’s baby. But it did nothing but make me fear for my life, my daughter's, tremendously more. I had to keep this a secret. Damien couldn’t find out. If it wasn’t for that sweet nurse doing what she did…

Fuck.

It was far too dangerous for me to stay here. I had to find some way to save us, preferably before it was too late.

With that new resolve in mind, I tore the page up into what had to be a hundred pieces by the time I was fully satisfied enough to stop. There was a small trash can in my bathroom, so as fast as possible, I scooped the trash up and deposited every bit of it in the bin, double checking to ensure I hadn’t left any scraps behind.

I didn’t.

The evidence might’ve been gone now, but it sure as fuck didn’t lessen the weight barricaded on my shoulders.

The bedroom door opened as I walked out the bathroom, making me suck back in the breath I was about to release as Lena walked inside and slammed the door. The moment she reached behind her and locked it, her dark eyes padlocked on me and full of malice, I knew what was about to happen.

And I was all fucking for it.

“Come on then,” I snarled, preparing my fight stance, and taunting her with two fingers, daring her to do it. “Make my fucking day.”

She barely made it two steps away from the door before it was kicked off its hinges. The next thing I knew, Smoke had Lena by the back of her hair with one hand and the other raised high, armed, his face twisted with a fury that had me stepping three steps back, wide-eyed and stunned.

“I warned you what would happen if you came up here,” he growled in a way that sent heat flooding down to my core. Lena cried out when he gripped her hair harder and dragged the gun slowly down her right cheek. “Didn’t I?”

“You’re too attached, Smoke,” Lena snapped right back at him, her body shaking against his. “Either way, whether it’s by my hand or Damien’s, shewilldie.”

I couldn’t believe my eyes as I watched Smoke bash the butt of his gun between Lena’s eyes in a brutalsmack, knocking her out cold. I gasped again when he spun on his heel and then proceeded to drag her out the room.

I wasn’t sure why I did, but I followed, sticking my head out through the door. Smoke lifted Lena like she weighed nothing and literally hurled her inside a room a few doors down from mine.

My breath caught when he turned his head and our eyes locked.

Shit.

Not knowing what else to do, I ran, trekking down the staircase and knowing from the sound of the footsteps stampeding behind me that Smoke was hot on my ass. When I finally made it down to the main floor, I charged at the door. Smoke caught me before I could ever get the first latch fully unlocked.

“NO!” I squirmed in his hold when he spun me around, my back smacking against the door, making me cry out in terror. “Please, let me go! Please—”

Smoke’s hand pressed over my mouth, silencing my pleas. “I’m not going to hurt you, Ginger.” His voice was soft, so relaxing I was disgusted at how quickly my body gave out and sank back against the door in defeat.

Smoke removed his hand from my mouth. “I know the baby isn’t Damien’s.”

My blood ran cold for a small moment. But then my breathing grew heavy, harsher as the panic took hold, flooding over me in intense waves.

“Breathe, Ginger.” Smoke reached up and cradled my face. “It’s okay, sweetheart. I was the one who ordered the nurse to fabricate the report as a safety precaution. I saved your life, Ginger.”

The room felt like it was caving in around me the harder it became to breathe. Black spots darkened the corners of my eyes as I felt my body moving…

I was falling….

“Fuck, Ginger!”

I blinked, catching a small glimpse of the floor before my head fell back and a blurry version of Smoke’s head appeared above me. He was sitting down…

No.

He was holding me.
