“Breathe, Gin.” His hand grasped mine and he placed it against his chest, forcing me to feel him as he breathed. “Do it with me. In. Out. In. Out. You’re safe, Ginger. I promise.”

His heart thumped wildly against my palm. Tears slipped out my blurry eyes as I forced myself to heave in as much air as I could salvage.

“I’ll help you,” he whispered softly. “Whatever you need, it’s yours, okay? I just need you to trust me. Can you do that for me?”

Another tear slipped out my eye as I struggled to say my best friend’s name.

“Who?” Smoke leaned down closer to hear me.

I squeezed my eyes closed for a moment, my heart pounding harder than ever. I couldn’t get the words out. I could hardly breathe. No matter how hard I tried, all I could do was panic, seeing nothing but black.

“No, no, no, Gin, don’t do that. Talk to me.Breathe.”

Those were the last words I heard before the darkness broke though, claiming me.

Days passed by—eight if my calculations were correct, and I was all but fully healed physically. Most of the bruising had subsided other than the ones on my inner thighs and down my legs. The painkillers helped tremendously.

“Focus,” Isaac demanded as he approached me in my living room, cradling my face and brushing his lips softly against mine. “This is serious, Samurai. You can get hurt.”

I kissed him, praying I could drain his worries away. Today was the second trial. Was I ready for it? Fuck no. But he’d been here day in and out prepping me. I’d face not only them, my father, butallof the Ravagers tonight.

“I’ll be okay.”

He sneered as he pulled away from me, shaking his head. “No, I can’t let you do this. You’re not ready.”

“I’m not a baby. Stop treating me like one.”

I wouldn’t lie. My strength and endurance were still compromised. Hell, a feral bobcat could probably take me out at this point, but I refused to fully put myself out of the game.

“You’re not ready,” Isaac repeated, growing frustrated with me. “Like it or not, you’re out.”

“That’s not your choice,” I countered.

“It will be if I can help it.”

Furious with him, I walked away and stalked down the hall to my bathroom, grabbing my pain pills and popping two in my mouth, confident they’d get the job done.

“Now you’re really not doing it,” he said from behind me, having followed me.

I was so frustrated I wanted to scream at him, but I bit it back, knowing it would only make things worse.

“Yes, I am, Isaac, and there’s nothing you can say or do that’ll stop me.”

I pushed him aside as I walked out and fetched my shoes by the front door, sliding them on. By the time he made it into the room, the front door opened. Phantom and Rhett stared at me from the doorway.

“You ready?” asked Rhett.

“She’s not doing this shit,” Isaac spat, his eyes all but burning a hole through their bodies.

“She is,” Phantom replied coolly, his sexy lips pressed to a thin line. “Father said so. Everyone is ready and waiting. It’s time to go.”

I stood tall, wincing from the pain. Isaac threw up his hands and gestured toward me like he was trying to prove a point.

“Icy hot,” Phantom prompted. “Fucking loads of it. We need to wrap her injuries when we get there.”
