“And Jace?” my scratchy voice shook.Fuck, I couldn’t take this shit anymore.“Water. For fucks sake I need some water.”

Mom backed away and leaned down to grab something off the floor. She threw her bag in her seat and fiddled around in it until she pulled out a water bottle and a disposable straw.

“Here, baby.” Unc backed away when she approached with the straw inside the open bottle and carefully brought it to my mouth. I drank what I could, internally moaning at the tiny bit of relief it brought to my sore throat.

“Jace is fine. For now, anyway.”

I scowled at my uncle.

“Things are bad, Griffin. I promise to tell you everything, but what your mother and I really need you to understand is that you are permanently benched from duty. Your time as a Ravager is over.”

My lips parted as I blinked at him. “Wh-what?” my voice shook.

“I’m sorry, Griffin, but that’s the way it has to be now. No matter what happens, youcannotintervene. You have to stay hidden. Damien thinks you’re dead and we have to do everything in our power to keep it that way.”

“You need to heal,” my mother whispered, sniffling as she reached out and cupped my sore cheek.

Unc nodded, agreeing. “That you do. The more you rest, the better the outcome.”

“My memories,” I muttered, a tear slipping out my eye and falling fast down my cheek. “You need them.”

“With or without them, it still doesn’t change what Damien’s done to us, toyou. He’s hurt all of us, Griffin, my daughter too. One way or another, he’ll pay for this. We may not win this war, but I fucking promise you he won’t survive it.”

“What about Ginger? How are we going to save her?”

“I already told you we’re working on it.”

“Whois working on it?”

“Rhett, Phantom, Isaac, and Samara. We have a meeting tomorrow morn—”

“Good,” I interjected, wincing as I slightly leaned my head over to drink more of the water Mom offered me. “You can meet here.”

“Griffin,” my mother started.

“No.Ginger iseverythingto me. She’s the love of my life and now she’s carrying my baby. Our baby. If my time as a Ravager is done, then fine, I’m done. Just because I can’t be on the frontlines doesn’t mean I can’t help formulate a rescue plan. That is my woman, my child—my whole fucking world—”

“Fine, Griffin,” Unc answered as Mom sighed deeply, her disapproval evident as she closed her eyes and shook her head. “I’ll brief you on everything before their arrival.”

Mom stepped back so Unc could peck the top of my forehead. As he took his leave, Mom sat down in her chair and scooted forward until her chest touched the bed, her warm fingers entwining with mine.

“Don’t take this away from me,” I told my mother as she kept her eyes to the floor, refusing to look at me. “You know how much she means to me.”

“I’m not taking anything from you,” she sadly murmured, sniffling. “Rest now, Griffin. There’s plenty of time to talk about it but for now, we rest. Everything will work out as it should.”

“What do you want to do for Thanksgiving?” Rhett asked, eyeing the fridge’s contents with an unimpressed look carved on his face. It had been a week since the trial and things were more or less back to normal. Well, mostly.

I tiredly shrugged, mentally unable to summon the fuck he wanted because I frankly didn’t have one to give at the moment. I’d just finished brushing my teeth and entered the living room wearing only my boxers. It was eight in the morning, way too fucking early for me to think or remotely care about anything—aside from maybe a fresh cup of coffee and my breakfast waiting hot and ready for me between Samara’s legs.

“Beats me,” I answered through a dry yawn. “Is there coffee?” Rhett nudged his head toward the coffee pot while I dragged ass inside the kitchen. “Fucking A.”

I took my time grabbing a cup and pouring the coffee, sugar, and creamer in.

Rhett closed the fridge and sighed. His eyes traced around the kitchen, his brows lifting when he spotted a pen on top of the microwave. He walked over to the junk drawer and began pilfering through it.
