“What are you doing?” I wearily observed him as he pulled a small pad from the drawer and began jotting something down.

“Making a list. I doubt Samara would want to spend it at our house, so I think it’d be better for the four of us to do something here at the dorm. Everyone else except for maybe two or three handfuls of students have gone home and Samara has nowhere to go. I mean, shedoes, but…” He paused, sighing. “Father will understand.”

“What I don’t understand is why you’re worrying over Thanksgiving when we’re due to meet Father in a few hours.”

“I’m panic thinking, okay?” He leveled his anxious stare on me. “I’m nervous about this meeting.”

Or more like he was nervous over how Samara, Phantom, and I would act being in the same room with Father again.

“Don’t be.” It was easier said than done because even I knew shit was bad and tensions were still catastrophically high between us all, especially when it came to Father. We may not have blamed each other but that didn’t mean our individual relationships with him had been mended. Out of the five stages of grief, acceptance had always been the toughest bitch of them all.

“It’ll be okay, Rhett.”

Doubt flickered across his face, and instead of responding he looked away and dug deep inside his shorts pocket for his phone. It buzzed in his palm, signaling a phone call.

“It’s Father,” he warned, releasing another sigh as he brought the device to his ear. “Hello?”

I continued sipping my coffee, barely making it two steps out the kitchen when, “You’re shitting me,” tumbled out of Rhett’smouth and froze me mid-step. I glanced over my shoulder and found a relieved smile spread across his face. “We’ll be there as fast as we can.”

“What’s going on?” I asked.

Rhett ended the call and faced me, his smile unwavering. “Go wake Phantom. Father said to meet him at the old vet clinic.”

“The vet clinic?” A confused knot sprouted between my brows. “Why are we— Oh…shit.” My eyes went wide, mouth falling open in a perfect O when Rhett’s grin grew even bigger. “He’s awake?”

“Yes. He’s awake.”

The confirmation had me hustling down the hall, trying not to spill my coffee as I went, and barging into my shared bedroom with the grisly grinch, shouting his name. Phantom let out an annoyed growl and rolled over to grab one of his pillows. He wrapped it around his head and sleepily muttered for me tofuck off.

“Griffin’s awake.”

“What?” He chucked the pillow away and abruptly twisted around in bed, sitting up and rubbing the sleep out of his eyes. “He’s awake?”

“He sure as fuck is.”

I placed my mug down on my nightstand and wandered over to my closet, feeling more excited than Rhett looked in the kitchen just moments ago.Hot damn. Griffin made it.It was about damn time some good news flew our way.

This caused for a celebration. A party at the clearing sounded like a fabulous idea to me.

Phantom scrambled out of bed and stumbled over to his closet, snatching down the first things he could get his hands on and throwing them over his shoulder.

“Do you need the bathroom?” he asked. “I need to get a shower before we leave.”

I shook my head. “Go for it. I handled all my business first thing.”

“Is Rhett up?” He made it to the door, pausing to gawp back at me.

“Yeah. He’s in the kitchen.”

“Let ‘em know I’m hopping in the shower. Someone needs to get in touch with Samara if you haven’t already.”

“I already tried,” Rhett’s voice sailed from down the hall. “Her phone is dead. She probably forgot to plug it up last night.”

“Go wash your ass,” I told Phantom before he could say exactly what I was thinking. “We’ll handle it.”

I finished dressing and trekked down the hall, hauling up my shoes by the front door and peeking in the kitchen to see Rhett fully concentrated on making a grocery list.

“Do you want to go wake her up?” I asked, gaping back at him once I’d finished sliding my shoes on.
