“Yeah.” I chuckled softly, returning the smile he offered me. “Let’s talk.”

Ginger

29

Iglared through my bedroom window, sneering as my eyes roamed over every single weapon strapped onto the army of fucking goons posted and strolling around outside. The higher I counted, the more my blood ran cold. This was really starting to piss me off. They’ve been here for a week, since the morning after Smoke attacked Lena for well, being a stupid bitch and trying to murder me. It was an act of retaliation, Lena’s way of trying to push my buttons and overwhelm me with fear. Fortunately for her, it worked. Not only was I terrified, but I was even more fucked now than ever before.

Lena knew better than to speak to or so much as come anywhere near me. Smoke, however; I hadn’t seen or spoken to him since the cavalry arrived, which was probably Lena’s doing after everything. I was worried but for the most part, I was doing okay. I spent my time no differently than I did when I was first brought here. I stayed in my room, watched TV, and ate whatever the hell I was brought throughout the day when it was time to eat. Smoke usually delivered my food and, in hisabsence, some other guy whose name I couldn’t for the life of me remember had taken over the responsibility. He was boring—and not to be judgmental or anything—but Smoke was so much fucking better to look at. This new guy was severely overweight, bald, and had a whiney, two sentence vocabulary that consists of, “Do you need anything?” and “I’ll be back later.”

I checked the time on the clock resting on the nightstand, and just as it hit ten in the morning there was a knock on my fully refurbished door. Hope blossomed in my chest when I spun on my heels, praying it was Smoke.

I missed him. To be honest, I’d found myself longing for him in my most vulnerable moments here lately, especially with Finn gone. It was fucked up. I know. But I was so lonely, and Smoke had been good to me. Actions spoke so much louder than words and based on Smoke’s previous actions, it appeared as if he really cared about me. I just wanted to talk to him. Find out what was really going the fuck on out there, why he hadn’t been around, and if Jace was still alive. He promised I’d talk to Samara again.

He promised me.

The door opened, and goddamnit if my heart didn’t flutter with anticipation when Smoke walked in, rushing to close and lock the door behind him.

“We don’t have much time,” he said immediately as he came storming towards me, hauling me up in his arms. He pressed a shivering kiss to the side of my head before he pulled away and dug in his suit pocket. He pulled out his phone and held it up to me, his throat bobbing.

“You have a choice to make, Ginger. The hit on Jace… you were right. It’s real. It’s going downtonight.”

“Wh-what?”

“Don’t ask me how I know,” he tightly muttered. “It’s for your own protection.”

I could barely get a word out when he reached out to grab my hand and slapped the device down in my palm. “You have one minute, Gin, two at most before we’re both caught and killed.”

He didn’t have to say anything else. I wanted—no,neededto talk to Samara, but there was way too much shit to tell her and not enough time to do it.

Fuck…

I’m sorry, Samara.

Please forgive me.

I opened the phone and as fast as fucking possible, typed in Jace’s number. My hands nervously shook as I thumbed out the message, finally hitting SEND.

“How much time do we have?”

“The odds would be more in our favor if I leave now.”

“Wait,” I started when he swiped the phone away from me and turned for the door. He didn’t have time to react before my hands found his face and my mouth pressed against his. The kiss was heavenly, everything I’d imagined and then some.

“Delete the message,” I whispered when I pulled away, the pain in his eyes making my heart sink. “Make sure it doesn’t track back to you. Whatever you have to do, just do it, okay?”

He wordlessly nodded.

“One more thing before you go.” I swallowed, a tear slipping out my eye. “I need to know if you talked to Jace. I need to know what the hell is going on out there and why you haven’t been—”

“It’s Lena. She called Damien and told him I attacked her. She planted the bug in his head that I’ve gotten too emotionally involved and could be planning to help you escape. That’s why I haven’t been around.”

“They’re keeping us separated.”

Smoke did not hesitate to nod, frowning. “It’s my own fault, Gin. As far as Jace goes, yes, I reached out to himdaysago. I wish there was something I could do to make it up to—”

“Just help Jace. Keep him alive. That’s all I ask.”

“I can’t make any promises, Gin,” he murmured in warning. “But I’ll try. For you, I will try.”
