Smoke lifted his hand and wrapped it around my nape, pulling me in for a kiss that had my toes curling and a trail of pure, blissful fire flooding down to my core.

“Time is ticking away, Gin. We don’t have much of it left. I’m sorry, but I have to go. Stay strong. I’ll see you as soon as I can.”

Those were his words, but as he took his leave, there was something about the look in his eyes that immediately opened the floodgates and had my back sliding down against the closed door until I was sitting down with my knees against my chest. There was more he wasn’t telling me. I just knew it.

I was on my own now.

He wasn’t coming back. Not tonight, and maybe not ever.

“We’re partying tonight,” Isaac declared first thing when we were on our way back to the academy a few hours later. “At the clearing.”

“Do we really have to?” Phantom’s large hand covered his mouth, shielding his yawn. It was annoying how contagious that shit was because it wasn’t five seconds later, and I was doing it too. “Everyone’s gone home for the holiday. We won't sell much product.”

While I was thrilled Isaac was overjoyed and wanted to celebrate Finn’s revival, I was inclined to agree with Phantom. Not about the drugs and shit—I didn’t give two fucks over that crap. Personally, I was exhausted, and I still had Sky to deal with too.

“I’d rather sit this one out and catch up on some sleep.”

“It’s still early, Samurai. You have all day to sleep.” He glanced over his shoulder at me from the passenger seat. “It won’t be all night. Just for a few hours. We deserve to take the night off and have some fun.”

“Maybe Isaac’s right,” Rhett said as he turned the wheel, pulling into a McDonald’s parking lot.Oh thank God. I was starving. “Things have been shit lately and we could use a little break before the storm comes strolling in.”

“What storm?” I asked stupidly. “If it’s supposed to rain then maybe we shouldn’t—”

Isaac bellowed out a boisterous laugh and shook his head. “Ah, Samurai, that was cute. He was being metaphoric.”

Rhett grunted as he pulled up to the drive-thru and gave the speaker box our order. He drove up, paid the cashier, and in under five minutes we were back on the road. I wasted no time digging in when Isaac passed my food back to me.

“You three can go if you want,” Phantom said after a long pause. “As for me, I doubt I’ll go. I’m expecting a phone call, and I need to be near my computer so I can get started on hacking those cameras. I want to do some digging on this Lena Montgomery bitch too.”

I sighed, struggling to control my anger as I viciously bit into my McGriddle. I didn’t want to talk or think about that right now.

“That’s fine, Phantom,” Rhett said when Isaac began to argue. “Either way it has to be done and the sooner, the better.”

“You two suck dragon balls.” Isaac bit into his pancake, scowling. “Fine. I suppose Phantom does make a reasonable point. But you’re still coming, right, Samurai?” He twisted around to look at me.

I sighed again, not bothering to waste my breath of protest. He’d probably just show up at my dorm and throw me over his shoulder out of spite.

“I’ll be there.”

It grew quiet as we all finished eating, and as Rhett pulled into the school and steered closer to the boys' parking lot, I couldn’t help but frown, feeling defeated. So much had happened sinceSky left and her return was not only unexpected, but horribly timed. I'd missed her dearly and yes, it was amazing seeing her again. She looked good. Healthy. Like her time away from here had actually done her some good. She was completely oblivious to what was really going on and how much danger she’d just put herself in, which meant that I, unfortunately, had a decision to make. The guys wouldn’t approve, but then again, they didn’t have to know. I’d recently come to understand that sometimes it was better to ask for forgiveness than permission.

“Want me to walk you up?” Isaac asked when Rhett parked, shooting me a wink that made my cheeks swell red.

“I can get there just fine, Romeo. I have some stuff to handle and then I’m going to bed for a while. I’ll call when I wake up.”

Nobody protested, so I got up and leaned over toward the front seat and popped a kiss against Rhett’s lips, thanking him for breakfast. Of course, Isaac stole a kiss for himself and when I reached Phantom, he cradled my face and pulled me into a deep, pulse roaring kiss that had left me utterly breathless.

My lips remained swollen even after I’d gotten out and began my trek towards the front entrance, reaching the elevators a few minutes later. The doors opened and as I stepped out, approaching my room, I put my key in and quietly entered to find Sky nowhere in sight.

“Sky?”

I didn’t notice her bags lying around, so my first thought was that she had to be in her room. The door wasn’t locked and when I opened it, I found her in front of her dresser putting clothes away. She was wearing a pair of black wireless headphones with little cat ears attached to the top, poking out the top sides of her head. She was dancing and jamming away.

And then she spun on her heels and bellowed out a petrified shriek when our eyes locked.
