“Lana Jacobs, spill the beans, or I’m gonna march up to your office and meet this paragon of a man.”

I cross my arms over my chest and give her my most mock-serious look.

“Fine, we banged on the couch, the bed, the shower…basically everywhere. We had sex so many times that I stopped counting. Good, hot, steamy, curl-your-toes sex.” I roll my eyes, exasperated.

From the sparkle glimmering in Jess’s eyes, I know that she’s not going to stop her questioning.

Unfortunately, I didn’t notice the man who had just picked up his coffee from the counter several feet behind me and was heading our way. He stops behind my chair just as my little outburst ends.

“I don’t remember us doing it in the shower. But that can be arranged,” says a deep, familiar voice behind me.

I feel myself visibly shrinking down into my chair.

Perfect timing. Perfect.

The smile on Jess’s face grows so big I think her lips might split. “You must be Jake!” She sticks out her hand.

He takes her hand in a friendly handshake. “I am. You must be Jessica?”

“You have no idea how happy I am to meet you.” I swear she almost squeals, barely containing her excitement. I refuse to look at Jake, even though he is now right beside me. I am beyond mortified that he heard me talking about us having sex. I’m going to kill Jess. This is all her fault.

“I didn’t know you ladies would be here. Didn’t mean to intrude on your gab session,” he says smoothly.

“Oh, no intrusion at all. Have a seat.” Jess practically oozes with saccharine sweetness. She even pulls out the chair for him.

Then she cups her hand up to her face and says to me in a very loud stage whisper, “He’s even hotter than you said.”

Jake’s chest rumbles with laughter at her words.

I feel my face burning with embarrassment. I’m gonna kill her. I hope she has her gravestone picked out. Apparently, the daggers that I’m shooting her with my eyes are going completely over her head.

“So, about that shower,” he continues.

I finally snap out of it. “Nope, nope, and nope,” I tell him. “We aren’t talking about this. And what, are you following me or something?” I shoot accusing eyes at him.

“I needed a coffee because someone’s been keeping me up all night.” He has the nerve to look pointedly at me and raise his brows as though daring me to respond. “You happen to be sitting at the coffee shop closest to the office.”

Jess puts her elbows on the table and rests her arms on her chin, watching the exchange with eagerness. She doesn’t say a word as she watches us volley back and forth.

“Looks like you have your coffee now.”

“I sure do.”

“So, you can probably leave now,” I suggest.

“I could,” he agrees.

“But you’re not, are you?”

“No, I quite like this spot. I think I’ll hang with you and Jessica for a bit. Jessica, you don’t mind, do you?”

Jess, obviously enjoying herself, isn’t going to tell him to go. “Please, stay as long as you like.”

That traitor.

She’s now my ex-best friend.

Jake settles back in the chair and angles himself toward Jess, ready to give her his full attention.
