“I missed you,” I whisper into her ear.

She smiles and looks at me, her eyes misty. “I missed you, too.”

“Lana, these last few weeks have been torture.”

“For me, too. I felt like my heart was going to be broken forever.”

“I’ll make it up to you.”

She smiles her sexy, sweet smile as she looks up at me. I see her eyes drop to my lips as she reaches up on her tiptoes to kiss me. “You’re gonna start making it up to me tonight,” she says. She presses tighter to me and kisses me again.

“You can bet on it.”

As I look at her, love reflecting from every pore of my body, I realize there will never be another woman for me. She’s it, my everything. And I will spend my life making sure that she knows it.

Jake

“I hear congratulations are in order,” Dax says from the open doorway to my penthouse. He’s carrying a brightly wrapped package with a huge bow tied around it.

“Congratulations?” I ask, confusion written on my face.

“I hear that Lana finally agreed to move in with you?” Dax asks, raising an eyebrow.

“Oh yeah, we’re moving her in next week. It took a while to convince her to move in. She felt bad for moving out of her apartment and leaving Jess alone.”

“I think Jessica can handle herself,” Dax says wryly.

“No doubt,” I laugh.

We both turn as we hear Lana coming down the stairs. Even now, months later, my heart skips a beat at the sight of her. Knowing that she’ll be moving in soon has made me avery happy man.

“Hi, Dax,” Lana says. “I didn’t realize you were here. I was just upstairs, moving some of Jake’s things around. It’s a good thing Jake has two master closets, or I’d be in trouble. This man has way too many clothes.”

Lana walks up to me, and I put my arm around her and squeeze her to my side.

“Hey babe,” she says as she kisses my cheek.

“Happy birthday, Lana. I’m not staying long,” Dax replies. “I just stopped by to drop off your birthday present. I got you tickets to see that play you have been wanting to see. And here is a housewarming gift for Jake, but both of you will want to use it.”

“You didn’t have to get me tickets for my birthday, nor did you need to get us a housewarming gift,” she says, smiling.

Dax hands me the present. I look down at it questioningly.

“Of course I did. It’s your special day, and Jake finally took a huge step and asked a girl to move into his space. It’s a big deal. You’re practically family. Besides, I thought the housewarming gift was something you both could use. Don’t open it until later, though.”

“We really can’t open it now?” I ask.

“Nope, later. Trust me.” Dax winks.

“No living animals?” I ask him.

The sly look on Dax’s face has me wondering what he’s up to. His gifts are always unique and often weird. For my last birthday, he got me a strange pair of fish sandals. They looked like actual fish on my feet. Who knows what he’s got planned for our housewarming gift.

“Um, no, not this time. Hey, you’re going to make it to Mom’s brunch tomorrow, right?” Dax asks.

“Nice change of subject,” I comment wryly. “Yes, we’ll be at brunch. Mom insisted. Said that she needed to get to know Lana better.”
