“It’s just temporary. I know it’s not ideal. I have guest bedrooms, so you’ll have your own space. There’s plenty of room. And I’m going to install some more security here in my home, some motion detectors, things like that. I probably should’ve already had that in place anyway.”

She looks away, but not before I see the indecision written on her face.

I hope she won’t fight me on this.

“I really don’t think it’s a good idea, Ethan,” she says woodenly. “But I can see your point. I’ll agree to stay a couple of weeks, but I need to be back home when the baby arrives.”

I sigh in relief and release the breath I’d been holding.

“Sure, I’ll get someone to pick up a few of your things. Just enough for a couple of weeks. Make a list, and I’ll take care of it.” It won’t do any good to argue with her right now, but there’s no way I’m going to allow her and our baby to return to her apartment when they could be in danger. At least she’s agreed to stay here for the time being.

Dax arrives first, and he’s ready for battle. “All right, I need to know exactly what’s happened,” he says, all business.

“Liz has been receiving vases of flowers. None of the notes are signed. The first two were a little strange, but the third was beyond creepy.”

“Is she being threatened?”

“Not in so many words, but there is an underlying meaning that makes me very uncomfortable. It’s definitely giving off stalker vibes. Here’s the third note.” I take the note out of my pocket, and Dax reads it.

His expression changes from curious to furious in seconds. “Creepy doesn’t adequately describe this. I need to see the other notes.”

Liz finally speaks up. “The originals are at my apartment, but I have photos of the first two.” She scrolls through her phone and then hands it to Dax when she finds the photos.

“I don’t like the look of this.” Dax pauses. “I know of a private investigator who handles this type of thing. She’s good, really good, and only takes on high-profile clients. She knows how to keep everything confidential. I’m afraid that if we hand it over to the authorities, it could leak out to the press.”

“Somehow, I’m not surprised that you know of a P.I.,” I say while smirking at Dax.

He raises his eyebrows and shrugs. “What can I say? I have friends in low places.”

Of that, I have no doubt.

When the doorbell rings, I get up to let Jessica in. I’m relieved to see her. It will be good for Liz to have a friend here.

Between the four of us, I’m confident we can come up with a solid plan.

Jessica strolls in, happy, not a care in the world. Her curls are carelessly bouncing with each step she takes. Wearing a miniskirt and a low-cut sparkly top, she’s dressed to go out. “Hi, guys!”

Dax is the first to respond. “Jessica?” Then he turns to me. “What’s she doing here?”

Jessica rolls her eyes, hands on her hips. “You know, I can speak for myself. How about you ask me?” she asks saucily.

“Nah, I’ll ask Ethan,” he responds. I can see the corner of his mouth turning up slowly as he turns back to me. Dax is trying to irritate Jessica. That’s interesting.

Instead of answering his question, I ask him, “You know Jessica?”

“Oh, yeah, we’ve definitely met,” Dax says.“Haven’t we, Jessica?”

“Unfortunately,” she shoots back, hands still on her hips.

I’m getting dizzy watching the two of them.

I clear my throat to get their attention. “I appreciate you both coming so quickly.”

Jessica sits down on the sofa next to Liz. “No problem. I have a party to get to later, but I’m all yours for about an hour. What’s up?”

I give it to her straight. “Liz has a stalker.”

“I’m sorry, what?” Jessica asks, drawing her brows down in confusion.
